PRISON LABOUR.
TAUPO ROAD. Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 10. A deputation from the New Zealand Automobile Association waited on the Prime Minister yesterday urging the completion of the road between Waimarino and Lake Taupo. It was pointed out that £3OOO would cover the eost of the necessary bridges, and that the thermal district would be made more accessible from other parts of the country by the completion of this road. Dr Newman, M.P., described Taupo as the best playground in New Zealand, and said that he knew of a firm prepared to initiate a motor 'bus service for the Taupo traffic from Waimarino if the j road was completed. Mr Massey said the Govenment- recognised the importance of the road. He looked forward to improving the Tongariro National Park, and hoped the , road wouid be formed soon. This would be carried out by good-conduct j prisoners, while the bridges w-uld be j built by contract. The Hon. A. L. Herdman said the plans of the bridges were prepared, andj he saw no reason vhy they should not j be completed within six months. A j start would be made shortly with the road formation by prison labour.
