RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Eangiora Borough Council met last evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr J* Sansom), and Crs Boyd, Blackett, Dix, M'Gruer, Lane, Walker, Wright, and Jennings. It was resolved to ask the Telegraph Engineer not to interfere with the present arrangement for after-hours telephone communication* with Christchurch. The Eangiora County Council wrote, asking that gorse and broom on a road fronting the borough reserve on the bank of the Ashley should be cleared for half a chain width. The request was referred to the Works Committee. ■ '. „■ A deputation, consisting of Messrs E. Evans, F. J. Breach, W. Bevington, and A.. Tutton, waited on the council and asked that a public meeting should be convened to discuss the question of rating on unimproved values previous to the poll being taken; The Mayor said he would arrange for a meeting on February 26. It was decided to erect notices to motorists to observe the speed limit of 12 miles per hour, and to go slowly round corners. In compliance with the new General Labourers' Award the borough workmen's wages were fixed at 9/4 per day, and the foreman's wage was raised to £2 .19/4 per week, with a free house. It was resolved to call the attention of. the Ashley County Council to the necessity for re-tarring the asphalted decking of the traffic bridge. A subcommittee, consisting of the Mayor and Crs Boyd, Lane, and M'Gruer, was appointed to interview the trustees of the Literary Institute and Public Library, with a view to the council taking over the control of the institution. The receipts for the month were reported to be £619 12/5, and the bank credit, balance £667 12/5. Accounts for £l4l were passed for payment. The receipts on the gas account were £l6B 17/-, and the expenditure £69 10/10.

A stand was allotted for hawkers at the south of Market Street and close to the saleyards.
