ORDINARY MEETING.

' At the ordinary meeting of the council ohe following business was transacted: — Accounts for the month, amounting to £Bb6 9s 7d, were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. The Secretary, Treasury, Wellington wrote intimating that the sum of £8 9s lOd, gpldfields revenue, had been remitted to the credit of the county fund at the Bank of New Zealand.— ' ThTcierk, Waikpuaiti County Council^wrote askin- the chairman to represent the council at the animal meeting for the election of members of the Hospital - and Charitable Aia ' Hoards.— Received, and Mr Green was elected. . The Chief Health Officer, "Wellington, wrote enclosing pamphlets on scarlet fever and «nteric or typhoid fever, and explaining the • necessary steps to be taken to prevent the ■ spread of the diseases. He also requested tne council to circulate the pamphlets as much as possible.— Received, and the council resolved ,to comply with the request. The Secretaries of the Charitable Aid and Hospital Boards and the Dunedin and Otago Benevolent Institution wrote drawing attention to the provisions of " The Hospital and Charitable Institution Act, 1885," th- annual elections thereunder of. members of the boards

and trustees, the date of meetings, and the appointment of delegates to exercise the council vote.— Received, the chairman havmt; issued his certificate of appointment of Mr James Green, subject to his consent. Mr James Green, Waitati, wrote agreeing to act as the council's delegate, and expressing his appreciation of the action of the council and his thanks for the honour conferred.— Received. The District Agent, Public Trustee Office, Dunedin, wrote informing the council that the public trustee had been appointed sole executor under the will of the late Charles Haynes, and asking if the estate was indebted to the council for any rates. — Received. Mr \V. Smith, Goodwood, wrote pointing out that some years ago he had petitioned the council to grant him permission to place a gate on an unused roadline leading along the top end of his section. The road had never been used until about two" \ ears ago, and was now only partly formed, and u&ed by only one party to diive his cattle twice a day. He hed requested him to close the gate, as sheep strayed tnrough it in nnmVrs, and destroyed the feed he had for his cows. He understood when the council gave written authority to erect a gats, any person using the road was obliged to close it. He asked the council to supply him with the necessary authority, and as the road was an unformed one and almost unused, he did not consider the request uiileasonable.—Referred to the clerk to ascertain *s.to the authority granted to erect the gate. The Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Wellington, wrote requesting the council, as the inspection of slaughterhouses was now vested in the department undei the provisions of " The Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1900," to cancel the appointment of any inspector of slaughterhouses by the council, under " The Abattoirs and Slaughterhouses Act, 1894," which had been repealed.— The council resolved to give the constable notice that his services had been dispensed with. Messrs Booth, Macdonald, and Co., Christchurch, invited the council's attention to the Austin Reversible Road Machine.— Received. The Secretary of the Inchdale Gold Dredging Company, Dunedin, wrote stating that the council's letter granting permission to dredge on roadline under certain conditions would be laid before the directors. -The council resolved to instruct their solicitors to write to the secretary of the Inchdale Gold Dredging Company calling his attention to the fact that the council's conditions re dredging the road had not been complied with, and, failing to obtain a' satisfactory reply, an application be made to the Supreme Court to prevent further encroachment on the roadline.

PETITION.

Fifteen ratepayers residing at Glen Park, Shag Valley, petitioned the council reqviesting them to put a plank across the Shag River at Buchanan's ford, the footbridge being toe far away for a number of the residents to use it. — The inspector was instructed to supply the plank, provided the residents interested placed it across the livei at tbeii own expense.

BUSHEY SOAD.

Cr J. Ross moved, and Cr Isbister seconded — " That the inspector be instructed to examine and submit an estimate at next meeting of the cost of forming the Bushey road opposite M'Kenzie's woolshed, Bushey Park. — Carried.

DOG- EEGISTRATION.

On the motion of Cr J. Ross, seconded by Cr Phillips, the council resolved to fix the dog registration fee for the year 1902 a + 7s 6d each for ardinary dogs, and 2s 6d each for collie dogs, and to appoint Mr J. Ritchie collector foi the county at the same remuneiation as that paid him during the cm rent year.

inspector's reports

Bushye Riding.— ln this riding the new road to Shag Point was in progress, but far behind time, although the work was being satisfactorily done , also, the new brielge was being proceeded with, but the contractor had been delayed with the work through being unable to obtain the timber, the supply being short in Dunedin. The maintenance gravel coutiact was in good progress, with good material supplied so far. — Received, and the inspector instructed to request the contractors to push oil the work in connection with their respective contracts. Goodwood Hiding. — The contract, gravel on the Village Settlement road, was also behind time, but the contractoi had got very tough mateiial, and was entitled to some con-sidem-tion.—Received.

Blue Mountain Riding. — The contract in this riding could not be gone on with for some time. The small bridge over the river had been " finished. — Received.

Dunback Riding. — In this riding the contract on Davis' s Golden Bar road was in fair progress ; as was also the contract for maintenance gravel on Dunback Hill ; and the improvement to the road past Cox's diggings had been finished as far as the contract extended. — Received.

Green Valley Riding. — The surfacemen in this riding had improved D. Muir's Highlay road. The rock had been very hard, but by great peiseverance the road had been greatly improved. Received.

Macrae's Riding. — In this i ; ding the Waikouaiti County Council were 6 om S * o improve the formed road, leading to Mr George Ross's small-grazing-ruu, Stonebum district. — Received. The council then adjourned.
