OTAGO SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

A meeting of the Otago School Commissioners was held on Tuesday afternoon, and attended by Messrs A. Baldey (chairman), T. Mac Gibbon, W. Dallas, and D. Borrie.

The Southland agent reported having attended the Warden's Court at Waikaia to lepresent the commissioners' interests with Holland and party's application for a dieclging claim on section 80, block I, Wendon, and he raised the question of whether the commissioners should receive rent under " The Mining Act, 1886," or the Mining Act of 1898. — Received. A report was received from Messrs Baldey and Mac Gibbon on Mr R. Copland's leasehold section 25, block VIII, Invercargill Hundred, with a. recommendation that as far as possible his application for an extension of ihe lease be granted. — Report appioved and adopted.

A memo, was received from the Clerk of the Southland County Council stating that the county engineer would report on the river encroachment opposite section 2, block 11, 'Wendon, when in the district. — Received.

Another memo, from the same was received together with a resolution of the council asking the commissioners to vote the sum of £50 towards gravelling the Otama Valley road instead of a subsidy, and stating that the County Road Board were spending £90. Resolved +hat the resolution of August 20th re one-fourth be rescinded, and that in lieu thereof the sum of £25 be granted for gravelling

and improving the road, the amount to be paid on the certificate of the engineer that the sum total of £115 had been expended on thr said rotfd.

An application from Messrs Hislop and Cieagh for consent to the transfer of lease of section 8, block 84, Oaxnaru Town, from the National Bank of New Zealand to Mrs M. Hughes a, as granted on the usual conditions.

John M'Biicle, lessee of section 2 of 30, block X, Oamaru Siuvey District, applied for consent to the transfer of the lease to Mrs Isabella Newlands. — Granted.

Mr Robert Greig. lessee of section 2, block XVIII, and section 5, block X,Glenomaiu, wioU asking that valuation be allowed at the end of his le.'.-e for dealing the land and sowing it in English grass. — Resolved that the commissioners could not see their way to make any alteration in the present lease, it having only nine months to run, but were willing if Mr Greig so desired, to terminate the lease on April 30, 1902.

A petition was received irom seven tenants at Wendon Valley for a reduction of rent. — Resolved that the request coukl not be entertained.

The Southland Agent reported on Mr G. Evans's leasehold section, 48, block 11, Oterarnika,. and recommended that unless he transferred the lease or paid up arrears before April 30 next, r°-entry should bs made, and the lease determined and offered at first sale. — The lease to be 'determined and the section offered to Mr Walsh up to April, 1902. : The Southland Agent reported le damage done to Messrs Gall and Paterson's leasehold by the Argyle Hydraulic Sluicing Company.— Resolved that Messrs Gall and Pitcrson be leferrcd to the said company re damages complained of.

James Woods applied for 80t)0 Sin drain tiles for section 1 of 105, Taiingatura, with a recommendation fiom Mr T. S. M'Donald that the application be gipntcd. — Granted.

Jaaies Milne applied for permission to transfer the lease of section 10, block XV, and section 6, block XIV, Lumsden, to James Hymers. — Granted.

D. Gillespie applied for transfer of lease of section 27, block IV, Wendon, to John Gillespie. — Granted.

A. S. liiissell apijlied for transfer of lease of section 66, block XII, Xew Ttivor Hui.dred, to Mrs C. M. Kingett. — Granted.

The Southland Agent reporter! the result of the sale of the lease of section 11, block XXI, Invercargill Hundred, and section 8, block XXXTI, Town of li.vcrcargill, Oi l the 9th inst. — Noted.

The Southland Aeent forn aided an application fiom Reuben Wicks to lease section '2, block XIII, Wenc'o !, at the upset rent of lid pel acre, provided he is allowed to pay the amount for improvemenis. valued at £55, by instalments of JSIO per annum, with 5 per "cent, interest and a deposit of .810.— The offer accepted.

The Southland Agent reported that none o£ the lots offered for lease at Gore on the 26th weie taken up at the sale, ?jut that section 102, Taringatura, was subsequently taken at the upset by the tiustc-es of the lite Hon. Matthew Holmes; also that Mr H. M. Clerk had offered to take section 15, block IX, Wendon, at the upset.— Resolved that the offer be accepted. The Southland Agent leported that he had arranged with Mr Robert Stewait, of Scott's Gap, to clear the loadline of goise for the sum. of ,£3. — Approved.
