ANNUAI MEETING. The annual meeting of the "Waiherno County Council for the election of chairman was heid in the Council Chambers, Palmerston, on "Wednesday, at -which there were present Crs W. E. The Clerk presided, and called upon members to nominate candidates for the election of a chairman for the ensuing year. Cr Stewart said he had nmch pleasure in nominating the council's retiring chairman for re-election. Cr Muir had in the past "discharged the duties in a. manner satisfactory to both the council and ratepayers. Last year lie (Cr Stewart) had nominated Cr J. Ross, but j ne had declined to stand, and no other councillor seemed desirous of occupying tne position. The council could not do better than reelect their late chairman. Cr J. Ross seconded the motion. Cr Muir r>io"posed Cr J. Ross for the position of chairman. This was seconded by Cr Griffin, but Cr> Eoss declined to accept his nomination, and eventually -withdrew it. . Cr Isbister said 'that he had supported Cr j ,Muir's nomination, not only on the ground that he had given general satisfaction in the 'past, but that it was the last year of the existence of- the present council. • The Clerk declared Cr Mun- le-elected. In taking the chair, Cr Muir said lie had no intention of accepting the position this year, and had intended nominating Cr Ross in the first instance, but he had been forestalled by Cr Stswart proposing him (Cr Muir). He, however, thanked the council for the honour they had conferred upon nim in again electin"- him their chairman, and for the loyal support he had received from members in the ■past, which he hoped would be extended to him during the current year. At the expiry of tha term of the present council he hoped some other member would be electee! chairman. In the meantime, however, he would, to the best of his ability, elischarge the duties of chairman in the future as he had in the past, and trusted he would give the same satisfaction.
