Mr Skene reports :— Engagements were never so easily got as now, and first-class men can get as much work as they choose at Bs, 9s, and 10s. We are as pushed for good girls a3 ever. Bushmen, 7s to 9s; couples £70 to £S5; shepherds, £60 to £70 ; ploughmen, £52 to £55 ; station cooks, £1 10s (slack time), busy time, 40s to 80s ; smiths and carpenters, 33s to 425 ; day labour— light, ss, 6s, and 7s ; heavy, 8s and 9s ; hotelmen, 20s, 30s, and 50s ; grooms, 20s and 255 ; gardeners, £80 to £120 ; milkers, 10s, 12s, 15s, and 20s ; hotel females, £40, £45, and £52 ; domestics, 103, 12s, to 15s ; boys, 5a to 10a ; storemen, 60s; barmaids, 20s to 30s; housekeepers, £40 to £80 ; farm labourers and " roustabouts," 15a to 20s ; stonebreakers, 2s 9d yard ; miners, coal and quartz, run about 10s ; town boys, 6s to 10s and no allowance ; country boys, 10^ to 15s, and fully found. Parents should ponder over this startling truth. P.M. Grant and Co. report wages:— For couples, £60 to £80 ; gardeners, shepherds, £60 to £65 ; ploughmen, £52 to £65 per annum, and all found ; farm hands, grooms, milkers, 20s ; station and farm cooks, smiths, carpenters, engine-drivers, 25s to 30s ; youths, boys, 5s to 10s ; hotel hands, 15s to 25s per weak, and found ; day labour, 6s to 8s ; smiths, carpenters, 8s to 10s ; domestic servants, farm, country, £30 to £45 ; hotels and town, 12s, 16s, 20s ; nursegirls, ss, 10s ; barmaids, cook° 20s, 30s.
