Heddon Bush Bachelors' Ball.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Ihe entertainments given by the Heddon Bush bachelors have attained a more than local celebrity for the enjoyment provided^ for? theguests lucky enough to be present, and the one which eventuated on / Friday evening, the 18th inst was no whit behind its predecessors, but had the Fates been propitious m the matter of weather, it must have attained a standard which" it iw.puld be difficult to eclipse. The district was visited two days prior to the ball, by .a perfect deluge of; rain X • ■'whicli caused a : heavy flood :in th£ various rivers and so .prevented a , large number of visitors from;Winton and Otautau from being present/, and they have; the deepest sympathy ' of "your own." Ihe ball was started to music supplied by Messrs Egan, whose name is a sufficient guarantee that that department was excellently catered for. About sixty couples promenaded for the first dance and ihe beautiful dresses of the ladies, enhanced by the brilliantly lighted hall, made a picture not easily forgotten. '-'-■'■■ During an interval m the dancing Mr hassiug, m returning thanks on behalf of the Heddon Bush bachelors, said 1 : Ladies and gentlemen, I have beep requested b) r the bachelors of Heddon Bush to thank the ladies who so graciously braved the elements to be present here this evening. I may say, as an old resident of Heddon Bush, that the young men who have provided this entertainment are m every way worthy of their patronage. I have travelled New Zealand from North Cape to the Bluff and I can say, without fear of contradiction, that nowhere have I met with a finer lot of young men than those ot Heddon Bush, which is not to be . Wondered at, when it is known that they have had the careful tuition of your humble servant, Mr George Hashing (applause). These entertainments liave m the past been the meaus of cementing several life-long partnerships m the .district, and from what I can see this evening,' this entertainment will be m no wise behind its predecessors m that respect (laughter and apjpiause},; " „ Mr Paterson returned thanks on behalf of the visitors m a brief but neat speech. Mr Paterson then sang m a very pleasing manner " Sweet Genevieve," - and m response to an undeniable encore, rendered "Bonnie Mary of Argyle " very sweetly. Mr St. J ohn Demar sang " The Red, White and Blue," m true forecastle style. It . would seem invidious to mention] names where everyone concerned did his or her best for everybody's enjoyment, but special mention must be made ot'jthe courteous and energetic secretary, Mr Frank Boyle. As previously mentioned, capital music was provided by Messrs Egan Bros Mr Geo. Tomlinson was an efficient M.C. Refreshments were excellently and abundantly supplied by Mr Kingsland, Invercargill. Dancing was kept up with unabated vigour till daylight, when all dispersed, cordially endorsing Mr Hassing's eulogium of %he JTeddon Bush bachelors
