CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following arc summaries of committees' reports, to be presented at this wek's meeting of the Dunedin City Council:— The Tramway Committee reports that the traffic returns for the fortnight ended September 19, 1914, as compared with the corresponding period of last year, are as follow:—l9l4—Receipts, £5096 12s 7d; mileage, 51,146 miles. 1913—Receipts, £2858 3s 2d; mileage, 50/473 miles. The committee also reports having instructed the tramways manager to. proceed with, the work of altering the open cars. The Works Committee reports that, at the suggestion of bis Worship, the Mayor, instructions hare beea given to form' about two chains and a-half of the tarred Macadam now being laid in Princes street south on a concrete foundation seven inches thick. The additional cost will not bo greatly outside of the allocation for the tarred Macadam only, and at the same time valuable information will be obtained as to the suitability of this method of construction as against tarred Macadam only and other methods. The General Committee recommends that authority be granted to carry out repairs and works to tho St. Ckir Baths, by day labour under the supervision of the building surveyor at a cost of £63 Is. The committtee reports that a request made by the Portobello Road Board and other local bodies on the Peninsula for certain concessions as to times and routes for driving cattle through the city, has been declined. The committee is of the opinion ' that the by-law on the subject recently passed by the council should be strictly adhered to by stock drovers. The Finance Committee reports having dealt with accounts totalling £38,020 13s 5d The matter of renewing tho South Dunedin 5 per cent. £10,000 loan, which expires on October 1, has been referred to the town clerk to initiate the necessary legal steps for the council to raise the sum required—i.e., £10,000. less £600 7s 7d accumulated sinking fund.
