CITY POLICE COURT.
-■■■ Saturday, September 26. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M.) Drunkenness.—Philip M'Eldowney was fined 10s, or 48 hours' imprisonment, and ordered to pay 2s oab hire. —Donald Matheson, who had been drinking heavily, was remanded for a week for medical treatment.— Robert Heads was charged with being drunk, while in charge of a horse mid cab. Defendant, who did not appear, was fined 30s, in default seven days' imprisonment. Theft of Whisky.—William John Newman was charged with stealing, on September 25, at South Dunedin, one bottle of whisky, valued at 6s, the property of William Glass. He pleaded not guilty.—Subinspector Fouhy stated that Newman had gone into the Caledonian Hotel on the previous day and, taking advantage of the absence of the barman, had gone behind the counter and had taken a bottle of Dewar's whisky.—Robert Henderson, bar- ' man at the hotel, said that the accused and two other men had come into the bar en Thursday afternoon. Each of them had a drink and accused tendered him sixpence in payment. He had gone to bring Mr Glass,' leaving a girl in the bar. When he came back the three men were in the passage. He did not miss the whisky until some minutes later.—Mary Bain, a servant at the hotel, said that when she went into the bar she saw accused get down off the counter, and ho had a bottle of whisky in his hand. She took the bottle from him. The other two men with accused were standing in the bar with him.—Constable Fenton stated that he proceeded to the hotel in response to a telephone message. When near the hotel he met the accused, and thinking he was connected with the matter in hand, he detained him and searched him ,and found a bottle of whisky (produced) in his pocket.—Accused made a statement to the effect that the bottle of whisky had been given to him by two men outside the hotel.—The magistrate convicted the accused and sentenced him to two months' imprisonment, with hard labour. A Disobedient Seaman.—Alfred Ward was charged that on September 25, at Port Chalmers, he did disorjey two lawful commands of the master of the s.s. Arrino.— Chief Detective Herbert said that a warrant had been issued on the previous day at Port Chalmers for the arrest of the defendant, who appeared to have cleared out without any authority. He was arrested in the evening by Detectives Hall and Ward. Ho asked that defendant be remanded to appear at Port Chalmers at 2 30 p.m.—The magistrate granted the request.
