SIDESHOWMEN SUED
CLAIMS FOR RENT OF SPACE WHANGAREI EXHIBITION [by TELEGRAPH —owx correspoxdext] WHANGAREI, Tuesday Six sideshowmen appeared at the Magistrate's Court to-day, having been proceeded against by the A\ hangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society foi recovery of rent for the space at present occupied by them at the Winter Exhibition. Four of them confessed to judgments totalling £36 Ss 6d, while another paid the claim of £2 into Court. The sixth man, Aleko, defended a claim for £4: 2s 6d, being the balance of £8 2s Gd. Defendant had already paid £-1 on account. Francis James Howie, amusement supervisor of the exhibition committee, sjaid he had entered into a contract with defendant at the Hamilton Winter Show for the rental of space. However, last Saturday Aleko said he thought £1 was ;i fair rental. . Defendant said he told Howie that lie would not pay the £8 2s 6d as he had not been given the position he had stipulated, but had been placed in a "trashv" position. The Magistrate, Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., said defendant had accepted the position given him. Of course, the real trouble had been the wet weather, and this naturally was not controlled by tlie exhibition committee. Defendant made a contract and it must be enforced. The committee could under the circumstances meet defendant in the matter, but that would be as_a matter of grace and not for the magistrate to Judgment was given for plaintiff for £1 2s 6d, solicitor's fee, £1 6s, and costs, 12s in this and the confessed judgments. The magistrate made an order for tbe immediate execution of the judgments. _ The secretary of the society, Mr. 0. P. Bugler, stated this evening that the position was now satisfactory and no further • trouble--jras anticipated,
