SCOW CARETAKER'S DEATH
CORONER OPENS INQUEST
An inquest was opened yesterday by Mr. F. K. Hunt, coroner, into tho death of Mr. Ernest George James, single, aged 58, caretaker of the scow T'lahine, in the Auckland Hospital on Monday morning.
Evidence was given by Mr. 1). W. Evans, watchman of a near by sawmill in Freeman's Bay, who found deceased lying on the beach beside the scow oil Saturday night. He said deceased had apparentlv slipped while climbing a bidder on to'the scow, and fallen, striking his head on a sharp boulder. Before being taken to hospital, deceased told him "no one had struck him. Deceased had lived on scows in and about Freeman's Bay for about 12 years, acting as caretaker, and he had lived on the luahine for the past five years. The inquest was adjourned sine die to allow medical evidence to be taken.
