NOTES FROM TRENTHAM.

TO-DAY'S CONTESTANTS.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday.

Wliat must constitute a record for secondday acceptances locally has been received for to-morrow's racing at Trent-ham. Rain commenced to fall at - p.m. and weather prospects are not too promising. The winners look just as hard to find as on the first day of the meeting. Zeuxis looks a likely improver in the opening event, ou first day s form, and Imarosebud is a newcomer who might be jfcll suited by " race of this *.* De. A very mixed lot in the Trial Stakes may see two improvers in Swoopalong and Sylvan Dell show up well. Both are expected by their connections to run decent race 3.

Do;ee possibly will bo favourite in the January Handicap, hull Feather was unlucky yesterday and Discourse may be a possib'lity. Clever and Gay Ballerina have the form in the Nursery Handicap, and they should see out the six furlonss well. Jaleux and Beat Friend are vossible improvers among the light-weights

The Vertigern-Talisker bracket is nearly sure to be favourite for the principal handicap. The Hawk and Papatu have to he considered on fir3t day's form, especially Papatu, who ran a great race without so much luck as The Hawk. Concentrate has to be respected on his best form. The Douro Cup is a tough one for backers. Gold Cure looks the b;st, of '.be top-weights. Great Star, Stanchion, Home Made and Toawai look likely in the middle of the handicap while Mister Gamp, High Falutin', Repay and Rio De Val can be marked ofi among tlio light-weights. An ounce or so of luck will be of great advantage, but a trio who should show up are Gold Cure, High Falutin' and Great Star.

Silver Taper and Cimabue look like dominating the betting on the Metropolitan Handicap. Childsplay should bo the hardest for tliem to beat.

Knightlike, no doubt, will be favourite for the concluding event. Quantum, who is a fresh horse, and Shrewd, who raced well yesterday, may trouble him most.

NOTES FROM WANGANUI.

MASK AGAIN IN WORK. IBY TELEGRArH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI, "Wednesday. I'lib report that Mask had developed h " leg" was scarcely correct, but ho injured himself aud was buio for a week or two. Ho is now in steady work again and it is expected ho will bo in good foim for the Wanganui Cup.

It 19 understood that L.atighuig Fnnee will bo given a chance of winning tlio Wanganui Cup. The son of Quantock was treated to a let-up after returning from Ellerslie, but ia now in work and should be iu great trim for the meeting here next month.

Cashier was all at sea in the eolt going at Ellerslie. Ho is in work again after a short rest and will form one of the tfordell team for Wanganui. The going here should suit the Paper Money gelding and it will not be surprising to see him set into the m \Vhite Hinglct will probably be a starter in the open sprint at Ashhurst. This mare has heaps of pace up to five furlongs and should make things interesting for the best of those engaged. M Gardner will take a team of three to Hawera. comprising Star Area, Warflarne and Potoafonu. Potoaform is a three-year-old gelding by Potoa out of Keterche and ib a likely-looking B °\varflame ran a pood race at Awnpum for a second and would have paid a big price bad she won. If Vivo shapes as well m public over the hurdles us she has been doing in her schooling eseuys she will take « power of beating in events near at hand. Horomea was sore during the holidays, but she is now all right again and should give a good account of herself at the meetings to come. Cobham was not taken to Trentham, but present intentions are to give him another chance at the Wanganui meeting next month.
