NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS.

BY ARCHER. Considerable patience has been exercised with the three-year-old Bold Archer and he has only been called upon to race once. On that occasion he shaped Quite well for a novice and can bo expected to perform a great deal better when he is more seasoned. Bold Archer is expected to make his next appearance at Takapuna and it will be interesting to see whether he has made any progress in recent weeks.

Two seconds and once unplaced is the record of Roman Pearl in her last three starts and she is due to open her winning account at any time now. She is engaged in minor hack events at Takapuna and should have possibilities in the class she will meet, although she will probably have to oppose several whose form has been slightly more promising than hers. It is in her favour that she is very well and may be better suited by tho track than some of her opponents.

On occasions Parfait Amour has shown flashes of form and he is doing so nicely for W. Garrett that he is being ticked off to win in minor company at the coming meetings. As a rule, he has done best in his first start at a meeting, but he seems to be becoming more solid with age and this may be reflected in his form later. At present he would probably be all the better for a run, although he is well forward. Parfait Amour is engaged in minor events at Takapuna.

Unless present intentions are altered. Zircon will be a runner in the Orewa Highweight Handicap at lakapuna. It will be his first outing for about seven mouths and he is not likely to be fancied, as he is not yet thoroughly attuned. A race or two at this stage should benefit the chestnut. because he is coming on nicely. All going well. Zircon should be in great order for autumn and winter meetings.

Two failures went down against Glena Bay when ho raced at Awapuni last month, but he was not disgraced and ran a. creditable fourth on one occasion. At Takapuna some weeks ago Glena Bay won a highweight handicap in attractive style and he looks a good prospect in the same class races at the coming meeting, as those he will have to meet are not a formidable lot.

Little has been seen ot Harbour View since he fell in a hurdle race at the summer meeting at Ellerslie. but lie was a visitor to the track the other morning and moved m good style over seven fur longs without making fast time. Apparently he took no harm from his fall and his condition indicates that he has done a fair amount of work lately. A win to* Harbour View is overdue and he is in a clasß where he might have prospects of success in the high-weight handicaps at Takapuna,

As a result of getting galloped on and a slight trouble that developed in his throat Jolly Money had an easy time for a couple of weeks after racing at the summer carnival at Ellerslie. During the past 10 days he ha 3 accomplished some useful work and seems to be none the worse for his short rest, although he might be improved by a gallop or two. Jolly Money is engaged in both the Zealandia Handicap and the Stewards' Handicap at Takapuna on Saturday, but• no announcement has been made as to which will be his mission.

Un to the present Macroom has not yet struck her true form this season. Still she lias run some fair races and it is on the cards that she might return to the winning list at any time now. Macroom has previously performed well in sevenfurlong races at Takapuna and she is in similar class events at the coming meeting, so that she is placed where a repetition of her best form would give her prospects of success.

Lately the speedy High Finance has been racing more solidly than formerly and has performed very creditably in her last four Btarts. High Finance is an acceptor for both the Zealandia Handicap and the Stewards' Handicap at Takapuna and should show up in whatever she starts. Six furlongs in the latter event may suit her best, but round the turning course she should run seven furlongs fast enough to trouble the field in the Zealandia Handicap.

When British King raced at Takapuna earlier in the season he let his numerous supporters down badly. Ho will have a favourable opportunity to make amends at the coming meeting in the Ferry Handicap and he might turn it to the best advantage. At Kawakawa last week he showed himself in form by easily beating Bombarder and gave evidence of being a fitter horse than in the spring.

It is doubtful whether Hyde t'ark has ever been better than at presen'.. and he should not be left out of calculations for the TakaDuna. Cup. even though his onlv claim to staying ability was a third to Phaola and To Kara. in. the Te Awamuti Cud two years ago. Hyde Park has run several solid races at a mile thiß season and hag possibilities in handicap events at the coming meetings.

The Takapuna Cup candidate Thursby has done nearly all his work on the tan lately, as his trainer docs not care to gallop him on the firm ground owing to his tendency to so sore when worked on hard tracks. Thursby is in excellent condition, but requires easy going to show his best and is therefore not likely to be fancied while the tracks arc in their present firm state.

As a two-year-old last season Tho Begum was rather smart and registered several creditable efforts to securt minor placings in juvenile handicaps. She has only had one run this term, and on that occasion was unplaced. However, she has retained her early speed and is in a class whero she should have good prospects in the Trial Stakes at Takapuna.. Ability to begin smartly should bo a factor in her favour on that course.

For a youngster that was making her first public appearance Tasty mado quite a creditable showing to finish eighth in the Nursery Handicap at Ellerslio on Boxing Day. As she is trained in tho country little ia known regarding her prosresa in tho meantime, but. it is on the cards that sho may bo an improved filly when she comes to race at Takapuna. Tasty is n shapely bay filly by Lord Quex from Blended and may be worth notice when she has bad a little more experience.

Chic of the disappointments of the summer carnival nt Ellerslie was Arikitoa, whose form fell short of expectations. Arikitoa is a good hncli when at his best and possibly ho may make amends at 'iakapuna, as he has had a chanco to freshen up in the meantime. Earlier in the season Arikitoa rnn fourth behind The Lover, Gold Money and Lei trim in the Takapuna Plate on the suburban course end a repetition of that form would make him difficult to beat in his coming engagements.

If Transformer runs in the Takapuna Cup on Saturday—and it is anticipated that he will—it will be the fourth time ho has contested that race. The Thurnham gelding has a good record in connection with the raco. for ho ran third on the first occasion, won the next year Bnd finished second last year. This time he has more weight than 011 any of tho previous occasions, but he will have to be seriously con sidered again, as, apart from a poor effort in the Auckland Cup, his latest form has been good. Should he reproduce the dash he displayed in running second in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap on New Year's Day ho should be handy at the finish of the North Shore race on Saturday.

The imported gelding Bright, Land sceins to have run a good race in tho High-weight Handicap at Trentham on Tuesday, as he was prominent most of the journey and finished close behind the placed horses. As he has only had two runs in 16 months Bright Land is probably not yet at his be3t and improvement in his form is likely as he becomes more seasoned.
