Mr J. H. Fry, of Makino, reports that the rainfall for June last was 1*52 inches ; average for that month for past eleven years 3*ol inches; rain fell on thirteen days and there were 15 frosty nights in June 1899, the average being 16 and 10 respectively for the past eleven years. The rainfall for the six months ending June 30, 1890, was 17*57 inches, the average rainfall for the first six months in the eleven years previous being 18*17 inches. A San Francisco telegram announces that a young woman named Stella Vaehon, employed as a hotel servant, bas been arrested on a charge of insanity. It appears that she snored to such a degree that the guests at the Cabot bouae, where she worked, were unable to sleep, and many left the hotel rather than be subjected to the ordeal of lying awake and listening to her. It is said tint no sane person could snore aa she did, but the lunacy physicians confess themselves puzzled.

A deputation consisting of Messrs Officer and Tansey, and introduced by Mr Lethbridge, M.H.R., waited on the Minister for Public Works on Friday morning witb a request that the Government should assist in widening the present 6ft track from Mangaweka to the Te Kapna block, a distance of about hirteen miles, into a cart track. The deputation pointed out there were thirty. six settlers living on the road, and that t >ey would go in for dairy farming if a road was provided for wheel traffic. The Minister promised that the request should receive consideration.— New Zealand Times.
