TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

The Hastings jockey H. J. Callahan, who had a fine Trentham record last season, will ride either Trebor or Cuisinier in the Wellington Handicap on Thursday. W. J. Mudford has been engaged to ride Submission in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham on Thursday, but he is not yet sure about whether he will have the mount on Centrepoise in the Wellington Handicap. Three-year-olds who have won the Shorts Handicap at Trentham in October are Grotesque (1922), Mimetic (1925), Consent (1928), and Curie (1931). The first pair carried the same colours as Baran will this year.

Corroboree's form and backing at Masterton last week indicated that he is an improved horse at present, and he should at least be a good place prospect in his Wellington engagements. His last win was the main event ou the final day at Awapuni last December.

Gay Gipsy, who is set down to have her first race in the Rimutaka Handicap at Trentham on Thursday, is a three-year-old bay filly by Kiosk from the Grandcourt—Orozino mare Court Step, a full-sister to Grand Jury and Kriollmere, and she is herself a full-sister to the useful Pekoe. She is owned in Wanganui by Mr. T. Hurley and is trained by W. Dwyer. The horse who appeared in the acceptance for the Rimutaka Handicap as Cynic is Cymric. Thi3 horse is a three-year-old bay colt by Roydon from the Paper Money—Bonny Helen mare Helen Bold, a half-sister to True Blood, Uncle Alex, and Haligan (dam of View Halloo), and he is owned by Miss M C. Wilson (owner of Argentic), who paid 270 guineas for him as a yearling. He had his first race recently at Ashburton, where he was sent out twentysecond favourite but finished at the head of the bunch behind the placed horses.

To aid the starter, a thin white line was marked across the course at each starting point at Ellerslie on Saturday, but as several horses were noticed to shy at the marks they were erased after the Welcome Stakes was decided. It was proposed to use such a mark at Trentham this week.
