FAVOURITES BEST

WAINUI HANDICAP RECORD

Open mile races at Trentham have a somewhat foreboding reputation, but, if the records of the last couple of decades are closely scrutinised, it will be found that they have been much more often won by the favoured division on the day than the open sprint events during the same period. If there is any race on the opening day of the Wellington Spring Meeting that should go to the favourite it is the Wainui Handicap, which has only rarely eluded the better-fancied horses. For three years in succession this mile has been taken by the both-way favourite. Three years ago the victor was the three-year-old Wild Chase, two years ago Kinnoull led the field home, and last year the winner was Sly Fox. Four years ago the three-year-old Greek Shepherd, as 8.10 favourite, was one of the biggest outsiders to win for 20 years, but he confirmed his form during the remainder of the season, though he was beaten in the New Zealand Derby by Lowenberg, who had succeeded only in novice class at Trentham.

There have been some other outside winners of this race in the period under consideration, the biggest upset being that of the four-year-old Diogenes in 1926. Love Song, a three-year-old, was ninth favourite in 1930, and King Midas, Quest, Tresham, and Imaribbon were others to beat the public selections. More than half of the winners in the last 20 years have been first, second, or third in the order of betting. The three-year-olds have had a good innings in the Wainui. Besides Wild Chase, Greek Shepherd, and Love Song, horses of the age who have won during the last two decades have been Croupier (who took the Harcourt Cup as well at the meeting) and Doree, and others have been in the minor placings. Croupier's 8.4 is the top weight performance, though Doree, a filly, carried 8.0, which, with sex allowance is really just a bit better. When Suggestion was narrowly beaten by Ardour in 1923 he carried 8.5. There is a very fine field engaged in this year's Wainui Handicap on Thursday, and the favourite will probably be the topweight, Beaupartir, who won his last four races in a row last season, the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes, Awapuni Cup, A.R.C. Easter Handicap under 8.8 (w.f.a.), and G.N. St. Leger Stakes. His Easter Handicap victory stamped his quality as a ! handicapper, and now at his first start 'since last Easter he is set to carry 21b above "w.f.a., a very fair impost. Though he has been off the scene for several months, he has been > galloping in excellent style for some weeks at^Awapuni. The weight alone will not stop him, as Tresham won under 9.9 and Commendation under 9.8 ancL Vagabond was twice second under 9.11 and 10.1 respectively. Among the three-year-old winners Wile Chase.^ Croupier, and Doree carried above scale weight, Doree's excess being'6lb. Haughty Winner's ability over a mile at Trentham is the high mark of his race form. Last January he carried 8.10 to victory at this distance on the course, and he was also in winning form at the Grand National Meeting in August, carrying 9.8 (minimum 8.0) over seven furlongs, so that he looks well handicapped at 8.8. Arctic King is another who has won open mile events at Trentham, and, after his unlucky third at Masterton last week, he is sure to be well supported on one of his favourite courses. With 8.7 he, too, has no cause for complaint. Homily, 8.3, was recently a winner !at Marton and twelve months' ago she took the mile event on the final day at Trentham in October. Old Surrey, B.o,,.Mishna, 7.13, and Corroboree, 7.0, are others whose recent form will assure their being among the wellbacked division. Old Bill's forward showing at Wanganui in his single start this season makes him second likeliest four-year-old to Beaupartir in the field, and with 171b under weight-for-age he is a horse who might be.capable of upsetting the best of them. The only three-year-olds in this year's, field, are Winning Rival, witb weight-for-age, 7.9, and Globe Trotter, with 7.4, 81b below scale. As Winning Rival won the Dunedin Guineas a fortnight ago she is deserving of attention, but she is a lazy filly whom this type bf event might not altogether suit. However, she must for the present appeal more than Globe Trotter, whose Masterton effort was one of the disappointments of the season to date, though it might not be long before even,ts prove that it was all awry. Despite his weight, Beaupartir will probably be sent out favourite on Thursday, and a mile may be shown this season to be his best distance. Others who will be well supported are Haughty Winner, Mishna, Corroboree,Old Bill, Arctic King, and Old Surrey.
