MINERS' PROTEST
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, 15th May. Regarding the Government's intention to import Australian .coal, the United Mine Workers' secretary, Mr. A. M'Lagan, has telegraphed' the Prime Minister as follows:—
The United Mine Workers' Union 'protest against the proposal to import Newcastle coal and thus increase unemployment among the New Zealand miners. We remind you of Cabinet's promise last year to refrain from further importations. Last September, when there was serious unemployment among the miners because of our loss of coal trade, the mine-owners and public bodies made a joint protest, and.tho Government gave an assurance it would import no more coal. The miners desiro now to know where the mine-own-ers stand regarding the latest proposal to import.
