(II TELEGKAPn.) (From "Sir Lancelot")

CIPUSTCHUBCH, 10th Nov. All five acceptors for the Middleton Hurdle Handicap were paraded. ■. They included three' horses that did not.compete on Saturday. Kohu finished up favourite. 'Sea. Blue led over the first fence, and at the stand fence was showing clear of Bjorneborg and. Kolra. .-The third fence," opposite Cutts's, accounted for Jack Symons. At the mile post Bjorneborg had moved to the front, and six furlongs from home Kohu joined the leader Racing to the top of the straight, Bjorneborg made a faulty jump, which put him out of the contest. 'San Sebastian challenged Kohu at the last fence, but the latter, well handled by Rangi, Thompson, won by half a-length, with Bjorneborg ten lengths away. Kohu raced in the interest, of the trustees of the late John Douglas Estate. . The shorter distance suited him better than the journey on the opening day MICHAELA WINS'CRITERION Maioha, Eleus, and.Miss Mimic were taken out of the Criterion Handicap, leaving in twelve runners. The public went solidly for Karo, who ran. a good race on Saturday- Sweet Tippertvry delayed the start, and got left. Kilbrogan went off on the move, Karo being at the other end of the field when they had gone a. furlong. At the .half-way, Croc ecs, Astinome, mid Mustard Pot comprised the leading division. As they swung into the straight Michaela and Karo moved up to the leaders. Croesus Jhad Kilbrogan beaten a furlong from home, where Michaela -got up, but had to do her best to stall off a late run by Demos. Karo, who made up a- lot of ground, was close Up, with Tigritiya and Punka next. Both first and second ran unplaced in the Stewards', which race Michaela competed successfully in twelve months, ago FAST TIME IN IRWELL. HANDICAP All started for the Irwell Handicap except Tropical. Cantabile (runner-up to Humbug at Napier Park and Hastings) finished up a good favourite. Samovar (Kilbroney—Tea Cup) stood on the mark and took no part in the race. The favourite started from the centre of the field, began, well, and was first to reach the course proper. At the distance, Sunny Corner challenged, and a hundred yards from the post Listening Post put in a claim, and, finishing fast, was only beaten by a head. Cantabile was three lengths away The winner jjut up^ faster time than was registered in the Welcome Stakes, in which she ran fourth. Sunny Corner (Sunny Lake—Angelino) was successful on the second day of the Dunedin Meeting last 'month. Messrs. Riddiford's pair, Wako and Shamrock, finished well back. Cantabile had every chance to score had she been good enough, but faded out without an effort -when challenged at the distance. ROSSINI'S DERBY Only Rossini, Royal Stag, and Affectation contested the Derby. It was a good betting race, over £6000 being invested, witli Affectation favourite. After one break-away they, were sent off on even terms . Rossini was steadied, and Affectation-led ,in a slow-run race from Royal Stag, with Rossini last. They ran in this order along the back, and with half the journey covered Affectation was 'two lengths clear. He was first into the straight, where the other pair put on the pace. They joined Affectation at the distance, and coming away Rossini won in goed 6tyle by eight lengths from Royal Stag, wifch Affectation about three lengths away. With a more experienced "rider and judge of pace than Bagby, Rossini's win would not have been as easy as it was. It was a. slow-run race, the first mile taking lmin 58 2-ssec and the last half 47 3-sseo. Mr. G. D. Greenwood has won the Derby on three previous occasions, with Danube/ Cherubini (brother to Rossini), and Gloaming. Dceley won the race on Balboa and Gloaming. R. J. Mason has had a. long and successful record in connection with the raco with horses carrying the colours of thp late G. G. Stead and Mr. Greenwood. The raco was the elowest on record for tbirtj-.five years. HUMBUG AGAIN. The Juvenile Plate brought out a field of five, with Humbug a good favourite, Right and Left began best, and led Hum- ., bug on to thg course proper. These frwo

were well clear at the distance, where Eight and Left still ,beld a slight advantage. A hundred yards from home Humbug joined in and a slashing finish resulted in favour of Humbug by a head from Right and Left, who has raced consistently. Miss Mimic was about five lengths away. Humbug scored his fourth win, and has an unbeaten record over five furlongs. His next appearance will probably be in the Foal Stakes at Ellerslie. METROPOLITAN TO BATTLE I SONG. All the acceptors for the Metropolitan paraded. Afterglow was making her first appearance at the meeting. Kilrush and Royal Star got out smartly and going out of the straight were showing clear of Bonny Heather, Mascot, and Heathercote. Passing the mile post Royal Star and Kih-ush still led, Hurry Up being just clear of several others, with Heathercote and the Greenwood bracket last. Half a mile from home Eleus moved up on the outside of the two leaders, with Kilmoon also well placed. Royal Star and Kilrush were done with two furlongs from home, where Eleus was in front. Battle Song challenged him at the distance, and ridden out drew clear, and passed the post with a length to spare. Kilmoon was close up third; then came Mascot, Kilrush, Afterglow, and Heathercote. Royal Star, Rose Pink, and Hurry Up were at the tail-end of the field. The success of Battle Song, runner-up in the Cup on the first day, was well received1. His owner was not present to see him win. TORTRIX SUCCESSFUL. The scratchingl of First Salute left sixteen in the Ashley Handicap. The public were divided between Tortrix, Seasprite, and Acquittal. Toi'tris was at the head of the field when they had grone a furlong, with Red Signal, and barley Rigs next. With half the journey gone Acquittal joined Barley Rigs, this pair being a couple of lengths behind Tortrix as they swung into the straight. Barley Rigs was done with at the • distance, where Acquittal challenged Tortrix, but the latter finished strongly,' and won by a clear length. Red Signal was a Rood third, just clear of Seasprite and Fleetham. 'Tortrix ran unplaced in the Spring Plate on 'Saturday, and carried, four times as mnch money to-day when ridden by G. Young, who also scored on Battle Son?. He was riding well, whereas Harold" Young, who is also attached to Chokeborc Lodge stable, rode two of his worst races on Gay Lad in the Cup. and Heathercote in the Metropolitan. Silenus broke down in the race. BRACKENFIELD IN GOOD FORM. Seasprite and Gflenghine- were taken out of Epsom High Weight' Handicap. The Chokebore Lodge representative MacDnff (H. Young) was backed as if_ he were unbeatable, carrying over £3000, and double the amount invested on Brackenfiold. the second favourite. From a straggling start Sedd elßahr showed out. After getting pushed back Brackenfield moved up at the turn, and came into the straight alongside the leader. Melee put in a claim at the distance, but could not reach Brackenfield, who won in good style, with the favourite a fair third. The distance and the scale of weights suited Brackenfield better than tho shorter journey in the Stewards' Handicap.
