TRAM TRAVELLERS
WORKERS' TICKETS AND : ' , TRANSFERS.
! In reference to recent representations made by the Trades and Labour Council' to the Oity Council in, respect of workers' tickets, the tramways manager (Mt. W., H. Morton) reported •as follows to the meeting of the council last, night :t— "The question of transferring workers at workers' tickets rates over the various city lines hae never been seriously considered. 'Hie original Order-in-Counoil and the substituted Orders-in-Council made provision only for bringing workers into the city from the various suburbs. In the great majority of cases workers required to commence work early in suburban districts haVe their fares paid by the employers, and such condition is set out in many Arbitration Court awards. Workers «ure carried at half rates, and at present receive a much greater, concession than is granted to any other section of the community,' excepting only school, children. If transfers are to be granted to persons now travelling at workers' mates' there is no reason why a eimila-r demand should not bo made on behalf of all other tram travellers,: and will "only aggravate those who contend that 9 o'clock workers should' Teceive the same concessions _as those who commence work at the earlier hour. ■ ■ ' ■
"I am strongly of opinion that tbe present unusual conditions, ajid' the heavy expense* occasioned by waj conditions, necessitate the greatest caution being observed in order that the financial conditions of the tramways ahall not: b© further disturbed and a. general increase in the coßt of tramway travelling be occasioned.'' The report was adopted. .
