CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.
Matters of municipal interest were dealt with at a meeting cf the City Council last night In the absence of the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G.). the chair, for the greater. part of the meeting, was occupied by Councillor W. H. P. Barber. Others present were:— Councillors G. x Frost, W: T. HiWreth, J. Godbsr, Wv H: Bennett, A.' R. Atkinson, M. F. Luckie, J. 0. Shorland, C. J. B. Norwood, W. J. Thompson, J. Castle, J. E. Fitzgerald, L.'M'Kenzie. 'It was decided that the Town ' Belt Forester's . services be granted to the Wellington Plication Board, to advise in relation to the choice of trees for planting at the city schools, as requested. In reply to a question from Councillor Castle, the Curator of the Zoo reported a! 3 follows:—"1 have 'ifoni Japanese newts. We have not lost any through deaths, and we- still have the* two tortoises. At present th^o reptiles are hibernating, and cannot be .disturbed. Councillor Castle should know this, with his knowledge of zoology. The Green lizard (New Zealand) escaped somehow through the top of the cage, . but these reptiles are 'airly common here; we have them even in the Park.".
Ait application for permission to place a petrol-filling box on the footpath in Wakefteld-street, in connection with a petrol storuge-itank "at premises in that street, was refused, owing to the likelihood of obstruction to traffic, and the danger arising from the exposure of the spirit. The applicants are also to bo informed that the Fire Underwriters' Association ,is bein°; written to, and \ requested to modify its regulations, in order ito permit thu owners to nl] the tank from the interior of bhe building.
