CAR OYER BRIDGE.
CONTRACTOR FATALLY HURT.
COMPANION'S LUCKY ESCAPE. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, this day. As the result of a car crashing through the railings of tlie Waitolii Bridge, about six miles from Paeroa, late on Saturday afternoon, Mr. John Buckley, aged about 55, a married bridge contractor employed by the Public Works Department at Hoe-o-tainui, was killed, and Mr. John Gain, aged about 52, a carpenter, suffered minor injuries. Mr. Buckley was driving an old model light car from Te .Arolia to Paeroa. In turning to drive on to the bridge, the car collided with the railings and crashed through to a bank below. It was badly damaged. Mr. J. Brown, who was driving ahead of the car, saw the accident in his driving mirror, and he and his passengers hurried, to release the two occupants of the wrecked vehicle. They summoned police and also medical assistance. Mr. Buckley, who had suffered serious head injuries, was taken to the Paeroa Hospital, but died two hours after admission. Mr. Gain's injuries were not serious, and he was able to return home after being treated at the hospital. Mrs. Buckley lives at 22, Aitken Terrace, Glenmore, Kingsland.
