"A PIG GARDEN."

CASTER 'VARSITY DEBATE. OFFENDERS NOT DISCOVERED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. At the annual meeting of the Council of the University of New Zealand to-day a letter was read from the Minister of Education, Hon. R. A. Wright, in which he said: "Recent examples of disorder among university students at public functions and at public places have aroused a good deal of comment." The Hon. George Fowlds said the letter had reference probably to the conduct at the last University tournament ?n Auckland, where students of all the colleges had been present, and to incidents on the students' journey south, and at the Christchurch railway statlon. The conduct at the tournament debate was a disgrace, and ho believed that in the future the debates would be held in the presence of thp judges alone. Dr. J. Macmilian Brown: It was a btar garden. Mr. Fowlds: Worse, it was a pig garden/ Professor T. A. Hunter said it was unfair to blame the professors. They could not prevent the holding of tournaments. Professor H. W. Segar said they could never get any help from the students themselves in discovering the offenders. Also, some of the students were not total abstainers. "But I have been at university debates, fie said, "which were like church services." The letter was received, and it was decided to inform the Minister that the college boards bad the matter well in band.
