CO-OPERATION WANTED.
IN FIRE FIGHTING. ONE TREE HILL'S POSITION. "If there is one thing where co-opera-tion is absolutely essential it is fire fighting. Yet *e have no metropolitan fire hoard," said Mr. It. G. Clark, chairman of the Ore Tree Hill Road Board at last, night's meeting. Fire fighting was discussed as the result of a letter received from a ratepayer, in which it was stated that on the occasion of a recent firo he had seen a motor cyclist seeding to the fire station to summon the firemen to attend an outbreak. The fire brigade responded promptly to an alarm, but often, bv the time it was given, the fire liarl burnt itself out. The writer pointed rut that there were no public telephones Jn the district to enable persons to give in alarm of fire. Mr. Clark moved that another application b© sent to the Underwriters' Association requesting co-operation with the board in the matter of fire fighting. This was carried unanimously. Mr. Whitehead, who headed a deputation from the Penrose Ratepayers' Association which requested better provision for fighting fires in the Penrose district, appealed for some better system of acquainting the brigade of a fire. He asked the board to supply an old hand-reel and length of hose until some better system was provided. Ex-mem-bers of fire brigades in the district were prepared to look after and manipulate the hand-reel.
It was decided to supply the hand-reel, together with hose. Mr. Clark informed the deputation that the board had been careful not to spend the ratepayers money on measures which would be rendered unnecessary if co-operation with the city brigade was obtained.
