NEW BRIGHTON.

The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held on Monday night. Present—The Mayor (Mr W. H. Bellamy) and Crs. Sellars, Withell, Bruce, Buxton, Scoble, Hargreaves and Goodwin.

Correspondence was read from t,ho Town Clerk, Wellington, asking for information regarding the number and wages of the Council's employees. The particulars were asked for to enable an actuary to report on the proposed scheme of superannuation for Council employees. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee. Messrs Duncan, Cotterill and Stringer wrote, forwarding a copy of a letter received by them from the Marine Department, asking for details of tho negotiations between tho Council and Mr C. H. Agar, and requesting an interview with the Town Clerk before replying to the letter. The Town Clerk was authorised to interview tho Council's solicitors, and supply all necessary information. Mr H. R. Wade wrote, suggesting that a road connecting Tonks street through tho reserve to Lonsdale street, would bo more desirable than the proposed road from Norton street, aud he offered to give the necessary land in Bowhill road. The letter was referred to the Domain Board. Mrs E. V. Howell wrote that a fine fir tree in tho Domain had been felled by a resident, and she wished to know by what authority permission had been given. The Ma_-or explained that ho had given permission for the removal of the pine tree, as it was crowding out an oak tree. The Public Works Department wrote, advising that tho Council's objection to the proposed allocation of the cost of forming Page's road from Breeze's road to the river had been noted, and the matter would be dealt with according to law. The Department asked for tho names of the local bodies, the districts of which would benefit by the construction of tho road, and what proportion of the cost of the work should be paid by them. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee.

The Finance Committee reported:- - Receipts since last meeting £578 12s, credit balance at bank on District Fund Account £132 19s 7d, and recommended for payment accounts and wages amounting to £43 10s. On the Special Loan Account there was a credit balance of £1039 17s Bd, and recommended for payment accounts and wages amounting to £32 3s. Th© report was approved. The Works Committee's report was approved and adopted. The Mayor explained the conclusions arrived at by the Mayor of Sumner and himself at a recent conference regarding the proposed application by the New Brighton and Sumner Borough Councils to the Government for an endowment to enable those bodies to moro efficiently cater for the visiting population, by providing bathing shelters and other public conveniences, and tho Council approved of the Mayor's action.
