ASHBURTON.
At the regular meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr H. Davis) reported that the debit balance at the bank on the District Fund was £306 15s 7d, and the credit balance on the Water Loan Account £1682 Us 4d. A letter from Messrs Scott Bros., the contractors for the erection of tho water tower, objecting to the Council's penalty of £56, inflicted for overtime in connection with the completion of the contract, was referred to the Water Supply Committee. It was decided that the Domain Board should pay a visit of inspection to tbe stone recently erected in the Domain at the foot of the tree planted in memory of the late Florence Nightingale, one* or two of the members having raised an objection to turning any part of the Domain into the semblance of a cemetery, and stating that the tablet erected was too much like a tombstone.
