ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. " Delta," Ngaruawahia.—The race in which the late E. Copestake was injured and which led to his death wfi.s the Northland Hurdle Race at the Whanffiarei meeting held on April 2, 1927. " Marape," Te Aroha, —According to the entry in the Turf Register, Beau Cavalier raced at six years old in the season of 1925-26. If that is correct—and there is no reason to doubt its accuracy—Beau Cavalier was seven years old when lie won tho Great Northern Steeplechaso. " Inquirer."—The Hawk and Chimera are each credited with running six furlongs in lm 9 4-ss. The Hawk registered his performance in the Waterloo Stakes at Trentliam on January 25, 1922. in which race he carried 9.2. In the autumn of the same year Chimera (9.2) won the Templeton Handicap at Riccarton, and that was the race in which sho ran the distance in lm 9 i ss.

HONOUR AND HIS RECORD. By adding the Wellington Stakes to his winning repfrtoire Honour finished further evidence of his risht to be accepted as the leading two-year-old of the present season in New Zealand. Un to the present Honour has contested four races and his record stands as follows:

When sold as a yearling last January Honour cost Mr G. D. Greenwood 2300gns. Of the £7OO attached to his win in the Wellington Stakes £IOO goes to the breeder ot the winner, so that the return the chestnut .colt has made to Mr. G. D. Greenwood at this stage is £2040. Honour's next engagement is in the Dunedin Chanipanne Stakes, which event comes un for decision on February 14, and for which he has incurred the maximum penalty of 101b.

A HIGH-PRICED FOAL. When the bidding for the possession of a foal takes the sensational turn, such forms the subject of a lot of speculation as to the outcome, whether the buyer or the vendor came out best over the transaction. London papers to hand, giving an account of the bloodstock sales held at Newmarket last month, state the bidding for ft colt foal by Solario from Mont d'Or fonned the medium of a sensational phase in the proceedings. From the start the bidding for the foal assumed the spirited form, and the Aga, Khan carrying the same to 5000gns he silenced the opposition. The leading lines in the pedigiee of this high-priced foal read as follows:

Sire: Solario, by Gainsborough (son of Bayardo and grandson of Bay Ronald) from Sun Worship, by Sundridgo (son of Ainphion). Dam: Mont d'Or, by Orby (son of Onne and grandson of Ormonde) from Cissalpine, by Cicero (son of Cyllene).

It is slated that the price paid for the colt named above constitutes a world's record for a foal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. A photograph of the New Zealand-bred gelding Jemidar, winner of the Perth Cup, shows him off as a horse of fine physique and one that can be appropriately referred to as a true Martian.

The brace of juvenile handicaps to he run at the Taranaki Jockev Club's Autumn Meeting are for Iwo and three-year-olds. The Auckland filly Eaglet, who figures in both races, is included with the two-year-old division.

J» fho decision of tlie Fitzhcrbcrt Han<Jji ,-ip, run in divisions at, Trcntham on Tuesday, fillies scored victories under the respective headings. Vnlpre, who led the field home in the first division, is a daughter of Chief Ruler and Valerie. Tea Queen, winner of the second division, is by Tea Tray from Graceful.

Maunga, who was h pronounced disappointment last year, and who had to be eased up after ono race in the second week of the present season, is reported to bo again in work with a view to contesting cross-country events in tho coming winter. The Mountain Knight gelding will requiro to accomplish a winning performance in an important crosscountry race if bo is to secure reinstatement when good company is a feature.

In the event of The Ilawk fulfilling his engagement iu the Taranaki Stakes next month, lie will have the record of contesting that event in three successive years. Martian's veteran son won the race at eight and nine years respectively, and, should ho score at 10 years old, a further interesting entry will bo made in his already attractive record.

The New Zealand-bred gelding Kaasay, who was bought in Sydney from Mr. J. H. McLeod at a high figure and who was eased up alter ono race under tho colours of his new owner, would appear to bo training on satisfactorily, and, what is more, is apparently viewed as a horse likely to develop tho staying quality. The chestnut son of Lord Quex figures among the entrants for the Australian Cup (_i miles) and tho Sydney Cup {'i miles).

I'lm Fifteenth Taranaki Stakes, which comes up for decision on February 9, tound 16 horses Btill engaged at, tho date of the final forfeit last Friday, and matters shape well for a good contest, as among tho horses left in are I.'agonelli, Tho Hawk, Bertjmoana, Cimabuo and Gascony. The race in question is to bo run over six furlongs and the conditions are weighl-for-age, with penalties and allowances. Paganelli has incurred a <lb. penalty, so that he will have to carry 0.7,

With a view to the Jjlverpool Grand .National Steeplechase the American millionaire Mr. P. Whitney is credited with having bought the steeplechasers Maguellone and Easter Hero from the executors of the late Captain A Loewenstein, and as it i 3 understood the sum involved in the transaction amounted to something like £20,000 that fact is pretty sure to keep both horses well in the limelight. Magucllono won the Grand Steeplechase de Paris, so that the French-bred mare will go to Aintrce with a good certificate.

Meadow Lark, who brought off a surprise in the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham, is a. four-year-old gelding by Songbird, his dam, Uuawed, being by Markhope. In the early part of tho season Meadow Lark was racing in hack company, and at the Otago Hunt meeting in September he won the President's Handicap (5 fur.) under B.U At the Dunedin meeting, held at Wingatui on December 27 last, ho won the Grandstand Handicap (6 fur.) under 7.0, running the distance in lm 13 3-ss. Very little has been heard of Songbird as a sire In his racing days Songbird will be best remembered for his victory in the C.J.C. Easter Handicap (seven furlongs), which event he won at fhree years old under 8.8 in the fast time of lm 265. Songbird is a son of Kilbroney and the Thursh mare Grey Linnet.
