A BATTALION MENAGERIE
A Colonel is a useless bird, And one you seldom see, He perches in an Orderly Room (Distributing C.B.
The Major bird is very scarce, And is called a two 1.C., He’s a tiger at inspecting The like of you and me.
A Quartermaster may be told By his visage sly and oily, He “dispenses” of the soldiers’ food. And treats himself right royally
The Adjutant’s a fearsome beast, • With language to the point, He watches your defaulters’ drill, Till you ache in every joint.
Captains rate at five a bob, But are very ornamental, They decorate a drawingroom, And look so sentimental. '. - *
The next in line is a wily sort, With two pips on his shoulder, When time for battle’s getting close, His feet are getting colder.
Subalterns breed mighty fast, Are always neatly dressed, But to soldier on parade, They’re just another pest.
R.S.M’s are very scarce, And of practically no use, But have a very definite gift Of handing out abuse.
A Sergeant is a queer fish, A sort of overseer, He’s vacant from the shoulder up, But likes his pint of beer.
A Corporal’s a funny sort, , For short you call him Corp., His intellect though bright at first, Begins quite soon to warp.
The private soldier is a strange And most mysterious bird, Though on parade he’s often seen, He’s very seldom heard. —Ydoc.
