Mis. M B. Lovcll-Smith, a lift- member of tin Women's Christian Temperance Union in Ww Zealand, died at her home, "Midway", Uppc Riccarton, Christchurch, on May 18th, 1959. The eldest daughter ou-hc late William Sidnej Lovell-Smith, she was horn in 1876, twent) years after the arrival of the Canterbury Pilgrims in Ken Zealand. Through her mother, an early member of the W.C.T.U. in Christchurch, and Business Manager of the newly established "White Ribbon", she OTIC interested in the work of the W.C T.U ;. she was Superintendent of the Legal and Parliamentary Department, which brought her into touch with Ministers of the Crown Then, for many years, she was Dominion Treasure and in later years, was made a Dominion Life-Member The work and vision of the W.C.T.U. alv inspired her and the local District Meetings and Annual Conventions were a great challenge to her outlooking mind Miss Loveli-Smith's Interests were wide and far-reaching She belonged to the Christchurch National Council of Women, being Hon. Treasurer of the Branch for some years She was a foundation member of the Canterbury Women's Club, retainher membership until her death She was interested in Church work, in music, in literature, and above all, she was interested in reforms for the betterment of mankind. She was a member of the Women's Unemployment Committee in Christchurch, set up by Mayor in 1930 and was active with the Committee in setting up training centres in sewing and cooking. Later, she vas the Committee's official visitor and her tact, her sympathy and understanding with people of few privil rid her practical help in their difficulties made her beloved by many women and girls. At one tin* inducted a Bibl it the Burvrood Girls' Training Centre The highlights r >f this effort were the afternoons when she took the girls for walks on the hills, followed bv a tea party at her home. Miss Lovell-Smith had a clear mind, sound judgment and a deep insight into human problems. Her voice and opinions in discussion were always listened to with respect. One of a family of ten children, she outlived all but four of the younger members
