THE LIQUOR TRAFFIC
By Marjorie E. Webster
Throughout our country, thousands of homes are oppressed by the evil and insidious effects of drink. Men and women who should be today’s much-needed leaders cannot take their God-given responsibilities. Homes which should be the safety and refuge of splendid boys and girls are tainted and accursed by liquor. Our Maori people are betrayed by vested interests. An M.P. in bis maiden speech acclaimed with pride bis efforts toward opening fourteen or more hotels in the King Country. He also urged the Government to institute lotteries in New Zealand. It seems almost incredible that a man representing thousands of people could have the effrontery to urge his country faster dowm “the road w'hich leads to destruction.” He seemed possessed of a callous enthusiasm which made listeners apprehensive for this, our beloved country. How men of his calibre can speak thus, broadcast to listeners here and in other lands! It is time for the women of our land to arise. This Member of Parliament was reported in the N.Z. Herald as having made a very brave speech. Jesus said, “But whoso shall offend one of these little ones, which believe in Me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he w r ere drowned in the depths of the sea.”—Matthew 18:6. St. Paul w’rites in Romans 14:21, “It is good neithe. to eat flesh nor drink wine nor anything whereby thy brother stumbleth or is offended or is made weak.’’ Every Christian man and woman, boy and girl hears that personal responsibility. The Liquor Traffic has tearful influence and unlimited millions. It h»* one fear—believing prayer. Will you pray? Let us call upon God for His help in time of need, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
