DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Mrs. Jessie Hiett Honoured by Dunedin Central Union A very pleasing afternoon tea, arranged by the ladies of the Dunedin Central Wpmens* Christian Temperance Union, was held amid lovely surroundings at the Dunedin Gardens Tea Kiosk on December 13th, 1954, to do honour to Mrs. Jessie Hiett, our President. Mrs. Peter Garden, Yice-Presiden* presided, and iti welcoming the guest of honour, expressed the pleasure it gave them all to be present to enjoy a cup of tea in this way with their beloved President, who had done so much for their Union.
Mrs. Hiett has served faithfully for 38 years, with only two interruptions during that time, as well as holding the District Presidency and also Dominion President for 11 years. A 1w r ays a gracious lady, helpful in every way, putting first things first and showing ever the love of God in her heart, as she works for “God, for Home and for Humanity.” At Hanover Baptist Church Mrs. Hiett was the Deaconess for ihirty years, and also a social worker in the city, and still does much helpful work amongst the sick and aged.
A beautiful shoulder spray of orchids was presented by our faithful pianist, Mrs. F. Clarke. Mrs. Garden then made the presentation of a table lamp and an electric heating pad. Mrs. Flett spoke on behalf of the District Executive and a
number of other members voiced their heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Hiett for her long and devoted service. A number of itcms were enjoyed by all. In replying, Mrs. Hiett spoke feelingly and expressed her deep appreciation of the wonderful gifts and for the love, patience and loyalty of the members, and then added, “Now’ what of the future? Let us use the Press more often than in the past. Write on the gambling menace and on Temperance. Let us endeavour to do more through t Sunday Schools. Let us always be courteous. What may w*e do in regard to Liquor advertising? 176 dailies in USA. absolutely refuse liquor advertisements.” Mrs. Hiett closed with this quotation from Dr. Andrew Ivy: “Alcoliam it the moat important problem in Weatern Civilisation.” With the Season’s Greetings extended to all, a very happy function w r as brought to a close.
