BUSINESS MANAGER'S REPORT

Annual Report and Balance Sheet for the Year Ending 31tt December, 1950. Most reports start with the words "I have much pleasure," but this year the wording must be a little different. Owing to unforeseen circumstances there will be a deficit on the expenses for the year—l am sorry to say. 1 must thank those Unions who responded so splendidly to Miss McLay’s appeal, for undoubtedly without these donations there would have been a sadder story to tell. The number of new subscribers gained this year was 86—but against this total I have had to cancel 77 names for various reasons—and also 24 through death. The new subscribers for the Districts are: South Island: North Island: Marlborough .. 6 Auckland .... 7 Nelson 3 Sth. Auckland 10 Nth. Canterby. 9 Nth. Auckland 2 Sth. Canterby. 5 Taranaki .... 6 Orago 7 Hawke's Bay .. " Southland .... 7 Wanganui .... 2 Cromwell .... * Manawatu .... 7 Wellington .... 3 44 42 The Union with the highest number of “White Ribbon" subscribers is Riccarton, with 132 members. The “White Ribbon" Vase, presented to the Union with the largest number of new subscribers must be shared by Palmerston North and Hawera, with 6 new members each. The Banner for Unions with under 20 members, having the largest increase in new subsciibers (on the percentage basis) is Otorohanga, with 189£ increase. Beacons. An average of 330 i> sent out each month. Y.P. Supplements. About 7,800 go out each month. Quite a number <o* these go to Missionaries and to native schools free. I feel much could be done with these little papers. This is a work that many could get busy about. 1 have sent out over 50 free parcels of “White Ribbons,” with the thought that the papers could he distributed with advantage amongst our friends. The aim for 300 new subscribers each year has sadly missed the mark this year; but surely this should challenge us to greater effort* during this cmnin year. Remember the words of Frances Willard: “For the cause that lacks assistance. For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that I can do.” My thanks are due to Mr. J. Sim> of Auckland for auditing my books and balance sheet. Also I would like to thank all the members for their co-operation and help throughout the year. E M. Appleby.
