REMITS FOR CONVENTION, 1951

Auckland 1. That newspapers and periodicals refrain from accepting advertisements from the New Zealand breweries falsely inferring by photos or script, that the regular consumption of liquor, even in moderation, is a virtue, and an asset to the Home and to the Nation. 2. That this Convention considers that girl apprentices, including Maori girls, should have the same monetary assistance as boy apprentices, when through force o_f circumstances they «re obliged to live away from home. 3. The Napier Union suggests that Dominion Convention be held at some time other than early in the year, as heretofore. (As Unions do not commence meetings before February, as things stand, it is rather difficult to make plans so far ahead a* November, when the last meetings of the year are usually held. Quite often, would-be delegates have had to take their holidays round about Christmas, and are unable to leave home so soon again.) 11. Believing that gambling is a denial of Christ, and is an evil which is growing at an alarming rate, the Napier W.C.T.U. would respectfully urge that Convention support the churches in their protest re the broadcasting of race commentaries, results and dividends. This constant broadcasting must naturally foster the spirit of gambling, amongst young folks, especially, and help them to. believe that gambling is just a natural part of life. 12. This Convention would ask that further representation be made to Parliament re a two-issue vote on the Licensing question, for we feel that many people who now vote State Control would vote Prohibition on a two-issue ballot paper. A sugestion was made that a petition he circularised among the churches asking for support for this request. 14. We are of the opinion that, as the theory of evolution is not based on fact, our young people of school a id college age should not receive the biassed opinion of teachers in this direction. Such teaching is very largely responsible for the undoing of the Christian conception of the dignity of Man, and the rejection of Creation as contained in the Holy Writ. Christchurch 22. That Parliament be urged to prohibit the taking of babies or children of any age into hotel bars. 23. That when the question of granting a new license for a suburban district is mooted, the residents of that district should have the right to vote as to whether they have the license or not. Dunedin 24. That in view of the grave peril of drinking among very young people, the law regarding the serving of minors be rigidly enforced, as frequently minors are before the Court for drunkenness 25.
