"Devotional Period"

“ It is not in their moment of forming, but in their moment of producing MOTOR EFFECTS, that resolves and aspirations communicate the new ‘ set ’ to the brain. Seize the very first opportunity to ACT on every resolution you make, and on any emotional prompting you may experience in the direction of that to which you aspire. When a resolve, or a fine glow* of feeling is allowed to evaporate without bearing practical fruit, it is worse than a chance lost; it works so positively as to hinder future resolutions and emotions from taking the normal path of discharge. The only schooling to fit us for further opportunity is found in instant and unintermitting performance of present duty. No paralysis is more dangerous and fatal than procrastination. The promise of the future often lies concealed in the promptings of the moment. It is to those who hold themselves erect, on the alert, that light first rises in the darkness. “We know the paths wherein our feet should press, Across our hearts are written Thy decrees; Yet now, O Lord, be merciful to bless With more than these. “ Grant us the will to fashion as we feel, Grant us the strength to labour as we know, Grant us the purpose, ribbed and edged with steel, To strike the blow. “ Knowledge we ask not —knowledge Thou hast lent, But, Lord, the will—there lies our bitter reed, Give us to build above the deep intent The deed, the deed.
