DEPARTMENT OF TEMPERANCE TEACHING IN SCHOOLS

The remit passed at the recent Convention: “That the Education Department he asked to have a quarterly lesson on the effects of alcohol on the human body included in the School Journal, and further, that inspectors he asked to examine and report on the same.” was brought up at the March meeting of the Manawatu Branch of the National of Women. Members agreed that such lessons would be desirable; and decided that a letter should be sent to the V\ anganui Education Board, stating that the Manawatu Branch of the N.C.O.W. wished to support the above remit which had been passed by the W.C. T.U. Convention. The following letter was received by the branch of the N.C.W. a few’ days later from the Secretary of the Education Board: “The Board has agreed to endorse the suggestion contained in the Remit passed by the \\ omen’s Christian Temperance Union, and it is asking the Education Department favourably to consider the matter. The Board is also suggesting thi»t the department make special reference to Temperance teaching in one issue of the Education Gazette.” C. JAMIESON Doin Superintendent.

Later. Manawatu Branch of N.C.W. have received the following letter from the Secretary of the Wanganui Education Board: “I have to thank you for your letter of 23rd April expressing the appreciation of your Council at the Board’s action in supporting the action of the W.C.T.U, “1 have now received advice from the Department that when the new syllabus in Health is issued it is proposed specially to feature in the Education Gazette health education, which includes temperance and the effects of alcohol on the human body. The Department states that its opinion is that useful articles in the Gazette will be of more use to teachers than articles ir. the School Journal for the use of children. "The Department also states that, further, Senior Inspectors will be asked to include in the annual reports, comments on the teaching of temperance in the schools in their districts.” Yours faithfully, (Sgd.)
