ALCOHOL AT A SOCIAL.

From the Waimate “Daily Advertiser" we (ptote from a letter written by the Treasurer of the Lower Waiha > Soldiers’ Entertainment and Welcome Committee. This committee entertained soldiers in the Morven Hall. I n fortunately, by a back entrance and a climb over a six-foot wall that is attached to the hall but not rooted.

The letter states, “It was deplorab e the amount of intoxicating liquor that was noticed everywhere. It was a disgrace to see at the supper table inebriates, fuming tobacco, ashes, and smoke over the cakes which others coming after had to eat. There were scenes of women in tears, trying to bring back to sobriety the gallant and coitragcoii> youth that bad been gulled by the sharks that abuse the laws of our country. We were living in hopes that the conduct would improve as the night went on, but by 12.30 the drir 1. was getting the upper hand, and at 12.40 the social had to be closed. The disgrace and shame and the undignified exposure that has been brought upon the name of the Lower Waihao Soldiers’ Entertainment and Welcome Home Committee i.s attributable to the persons who were responsible lor bringing to the hall the curse of intoxicating drink. lam sure residents of Morven who were kept awake by the unnecessary noise, and the committee concerned, would welcome an inouirv into who was responsible for the sale of intoxicating liquor in the vicinity of the hall, and to proem the names of those who use their cai s and lend their trucks to fly between the various hotels to bring drink to the country dances, which will cventually ruin the conduct of these halls.”

For the honour of our fair land we hope such lawbreaking will he stopped by the police.
