President’s Letter

My Dear Sisters, The W.C.T.U. is constantly confronted with great problems. God must trust us when He gives us such important work to do for Him. Three major evils are striving for the mastery, viz., drink, immorality and gambling. War makes a greater opportunity for the evil one to propagate these vicious habits. Tne W.C.T.U. has been called by the Saviour of men to stand in the breach. Shall we say. By God’s grace “the line shall pot break where I stand.” The desire of the missionary societies in Africa is to plant a line of mission stations right across the continent to prevent the onward sweep of Islam. Can we do less to save others from these soul destroying evils which are so manifest to-day. In your fight against immorality ever remember that there is only one moral standard. It takes two to be immoral. Both are equally reprehensible. It will not cure the evil to punish one and let the other go free to continue his vile practices in besmirching other lives. Hold aloft the standard of purity. The pure in heart shall see God. There is nothing finer in God’s universe than a pureminded man and woman. Teach purity to your children till they love that which is pure. Read again the front page article in the last W.R., also Miss Kirk’s letter. The orgy of gambling for patriotic purposes is sapping the moral standards of our people. No compromise with gambling is our motto. I am glad to know by the letters received from several ministers from different parts of N.Z. that churches are taking action against the ancient enemy strong drink. May God give them greater i>ower; for the Christian Church could bring victory. For all anxious and bruised hearts may the Comforter bring messages of hope and peace. “They cannot tie where God is not, On any sea or shore; Whate’er betides, Thy love abides, Our God for evermore.” Yours in hope, JESSIE HIETT.
