Dr. Karl M. Bowman, head of the psychicatric staff at Bellevue Hospital at a Research Council on Problems of Alcohol, emphasised the need for medical science to deal with alcoholism as it is dealing with problems of cancer, syphilis, tuberculosis and other major disorders. We hear a great deal about treating alcoholism as a disease. It is the only disease fostered by the State. We license men to sel’ intoxicants which make other men and women drunkards, and then we try io cure their drunkenness.
