District Temperance Rally

A very successful Temperance Rally, sponsored by the Wellington District, was held in Wesley Hall, Taranaki Street, on Friday, 24th April. Mrs. Sired (District President) presided,. all women's organisations being well represented. The meeting opened with prayer, led by Mrv Sired. Musical items were rendered by the Gland Bay Women’s Choir, and songs by Miss Bennell. All were much appreciated. Afternoon tea w r as then served. Mrs. Pcryman was the speaker, and gave some very enlightening facts on the liquor question. The following resolution was put to the meeting by Mrs. Pcryman: “That this meeting of representative we men urges the Government:—(l) To strictly enforce the liquor licensing laws, in particular those concerning the hours of sale, and of the sale to any person under 21 years of age; (2) That the amount of alcoholic liquor manufactured in this Dominion, or imported into it, be drastically reduced in view’ of (a) Food stuffs urgently needed by other industries (b) Shortage of transport even for the most vital necessities. Mrs. O’Shea, President of the Child Welfare League, seconded the resolution, after which it was put to the meeting, and by a show of hands, it was carrier! unanimously. Miss Kirk proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker, and guest artists, after which she presented Mrs. Pcryman with a shoulder spray—very kindly made by lift Cullen. The following Unions were responsible for the afternoon’s arrangements: —Wellington Union were the hostesses and received the guests; Wellington Central and Brooklyn Unions dispensed the tea; Karori Union was responsible for the distribution of literature; Johnsonvillc Union was in charge of the flowers and decorations. The afternoon tea was provided by all the Unions. The meeting closed with the lienediction. The resolution was forwarded to the Prime Minister and the following reply received. Dtar Madam, I am directed by the Prime Minister to acknowledge ’•eceipt of your letter of the 30th April, forwarding a resolution passed by your Union regarding the Licensing Laws. The terms of the resolution have been duly noted by Mr. Fraser, who desires me to assure you that the Union’s representations will be carefully corddered. Yours faithfully. H G.
