SPECIALS.

PONSONBY. A special afternoon was held at the monthly meeting of the Pousonby branch on Thursday, the 16th lune, in St. John’s Methodist Hall. The President, Miss T. M. Read, presided over a good attendance of members and friends who had gathered to do honour to a special guest, Mrs. Moore, who was celebrating her 96th birthday. Mrs. Moore is a foundation tnenibci of the W.C.TU., being a member for fiftytwo years. Pianoforte solos were placed by Miss A. Watson. Vocal solos sung by Miss T. Ellison, and elocutionary’ items given by Miss Read. Speeches of congratulation were made by Mrs. E. Williams, Mrs. A T. Lewis, district officers, Mrs. L Ernst and Mrv Christopher. Kec dicetions of the foundation of the W.C.TU. were told by Mrs. Moore in replying to the good wishes. Her daughter, Mrs. Mercer, also spoke <>n

Mrs Moore’s behalf. \ birthday cake presented by Miss Read in honour of the occasion and decorated with 96 kewpies, was cut, and bouquets presented to Mrs. Moore by Miss Read and Mrs. Watson. A new member was received. WINTON SOCIAL. A social was held in the Sunday School Hall. W inton, on Tuesday evening, May 31st, to raise funds for the Headquarters Dept. Clearance Fund. A charge of 1/- adults, 6<l children, was made, the attendance numbering about 70. Games, competitions, musical and elocutionary items were given, and

a happy two hours were spent, after w’hich supper was handed round Rev. Mr. Newlands was Chairman Proceedings opened with the singing of a hymn, after which Mr. Bates led com munity singing. At intervals during the games, solos were rendered by Mrs H. McDonald, Miss Walker, and Mr. Bates, while pianoforte solos were given by Miss McKenzie, and a guitar solo by Mr. Ivan Fortune. SPR INGLANDS. July sth.—A Home Meeting was hurriedly arranged and held in the evening at the home of Mrs. J. Weds to meet and hear Miss Appleby. Despite short notice there was a good muster of members and several friends Mrs Underhill presided and welcomed Miss Appleby and the visitors and expressed pleasure at such a good attendance The hostess presented Miss Appleby with a daintv posy of carnations All listened with great interest to the visitor, who spoke on the various aspects of the work and of what we are up against. A discussion followed in which several took part, and at the dose two of our friends were initiated bv Miss Applebv and welcomed by the President. After the Benediction a happy hour was spent with singing. Mrs. Rarnett, Mrs. Ewart Mrs. Green and Mrs Underhill rendering solos and Mrs Robinson a recita tier, A dainty supper and vote of thanks to the hostess brought a very profitable evening to a close. BLUFF WHITE RIBBON AFTERNOON. A Bring and Ruv social was held in the Willard Hall on Tuesday, 14th June. In the absence of Mrs. Tack Walker (President) on account of illness, the Rev. T. A. Speer presided, and after apologising for Mrs. Walker’s absence, he appealed on her behalf for more subscribers for the White Ribbon magazine. Afternoon tea was handed round bv the members, after which Rev. C Tocker, Invercargill, gave an inspiring address on “Bible in Schools.** Miss Mitchell proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker; Mrs. McQuarrie seconded this, and all showed their appreciation by hearty applause The stall was well patronised and Mtsdames Vickery and Lindquist were kept busy. C RADLE ROLL PARTY (NAPIER) The annual Cradle Roll Party was held in Trinity Schoolroom on Mav 28th. Mrs. Donnelly, Superintendent, welcomed the mothers and children, and the speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Mcßcath. who gave a very interesting address to both parents and children A dainty afternoon tea was provided bv members of the Union, after which each child received a small gift.
