WILLARD CHILDREN’S HOME.

ELEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT. JUNE, 1930, TO JUNE. IMI.

The year under review’ has not been so successful financially as in the j>ast, owing to economic stress and the recent Haw’ke’s Hay earthquake. However. the Committee have much to Is* thankful for, and muny blessings to count.

The organising of a “Shop W'eek” last Noveml>er. to raise funds for the annual slimmer holiday, was again a great success, and the amount raised enabled the Secretary -Treasurer to meet the needed exi»enditure. We desire to exprss our grateful thanks to Mr F. Jackson. Manager of Palmerston Pictures. Ltd., for the free use of the shop, also to Mr Cla ide Page for the writing of the signs for the windows. To those generous citizens w r ho supplied the food, produce, and articles of clothing, we also express our heartfelt thanks. The “Anniversary Day” function, just passeu, was in every wuy a successful one, both in attendance of the public and the bountiful supply of gifts received. We return thanks to one and all for help, and especially to Mr Westmoreland for the free printing of invitations, together with envelopes for same. The Sewing Committee, under the leadership of Mesdames Collins, McDonald, and Lovelock, continue to do splendid work, giving their willing service in the interests of the children; also organising .Jumble Sales each month. The returns from these Sales have been somewhat disappointing to those concerned, as much valuable time has lieen put into them, which should have brought letter results.

There is n alight change In the person n‘l of the Sew ing Committee, Mrs Lovelock being elected as Superintendent in place of Mrs Barnett, W’ho felt unable to continue In that position owing to home duties. I take this opportunity of expressing the Board’s thanks to Mrs Barnett for long and faithful sendee in the sewing department.

The usual gifts of clothing have been received Pom W.C.T.U. Branches und local citizen*; money donations from the Brunche.i buing very much reduced, resulted in 'Mly LOO being received, £l6 of which was donated hy Ijoyal Temperance Legioners, Bands of Hope, and Sunday Schools. This was considered a very fine effort for the young folks. We do trust that the adult branches will remember us in the ensuing year, and strnd loyally by their promises made at the Auckland Convention.

At the present time, only 21 children are In residence, and these are in the main department, under the good care of Matron Anderson and Sub-Matron Miss Pearce. I>u.\ng the year there have been six admissions and four discharges, and 15 temporary cases have been dealt W'ith, Including tw’o Napier refugees. The nursery has been closed down for a time. A good deal of monetary loss, in the way of maintenance, has neen experienced in the past year, and as this department entails a lot of expense, the Executive Committee deemed it advisable to retrench until prospects

were brighter. The Board’s very deepest thanks are due to the following donors for monetary assistance:—Our annual subscribers—old and new. City Council subsidy, C. M. Rosa Co., Collinson and Cunninghaine. Premier Drapery Co., Millar and Giorgi, Newbury School pupils, Klwitea Sunday School, Commercial Travellers, Mrs Jos. Batchelur, Mr A. J. Graham, the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), Mr A. E. McGregor, and muny others who wish to remain anonymous; and we again take this opportunity of expressing our sincere thanks to Mr and Mrs R. Tanner, of Longbum, for substantial donations received, from the proceeds of their Fernery’. GiftH of food, meat, vegetables, fruit, toyn, t>ooks. writing pads and envelopes, firewood, coal, etc., have been received, and for these we have to thank the Munawutu Meat Co., Mr Thwaites, W. Cook and Son, W. Puklowski, N.Z.I. Co., G. H. Bennett and Co., W. Owtram, Mesdames Heath, Firkin, Spall, Miss Uett, Messrs Chapman, Boniface Bros., J. Ellis, Mr Fairey, Mr Jenkinson, Rowan and Coxon, and the public generally; and our warmest thanks are due to the local Press for publishing the list each month.

To Dr. Barnett and I>r. Cyril King we tender grateful thanks for their care of the children’s health; also to Dr. Hooper and Mr Blair Torment for free dental service. The Board tenders thanks to the Orient Lodge and Rotary Club for entertainments and B|>ecial outings, also to the Congregational Sunday School for picnics, teas and Christmas treats;

and to the numerous friends, far and near, and young people's institutions who provide Christmas cheer; and to the kind friends who huve supplied motor transport to and from the railwav station.

Findlay Wilson for auditing, and to Miss Cl rant for free typing. Especially do we thank the numerous friends, far and near, for their warm support and generosity in all objects connected with the welfare of the Home; the schools and individual friends who respond so heartily to our annual appeal for eggs for preserving; also Harvest Festivals, Church Socials, Masonic Lodges, Ladies' (Judds, and Agricultural and Pastoral Association for Iteautiful produce sent in, thereby saving the funds .of the Home to the extent of many pounds. In conclusion, I would like to thank the President (Mrs Collins) and all members of the Committee for their hearty co-operation throughout the year, also the helpers and well-wishers for assistance rendered. 1 trust that the ensuing year will lie one of prosperity and richest blessing.
