NORTH BRIGHTON'S FIFTH ANNI VERSARY.

The North Brighton branch of the W.C.T.U. held its fifth anniversary recently. On Sunday, May 17th, the members held a Church Parade, and attended the evening service at the Baptist Church. Appropriate hymns were sung. Mr Fountain preached a most instructive sermon. Tiie sacred solo, “He shall feed His flock,” was sung by Miss Martin. A most impressive service came to a close by tiie singing of the well-known liymr., “Fight the good Fight.” The celebration was continued on May l ( Jth in the Peace Memorial Hall, which av us beautifully decorated with flowers and foliage. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr J. H. Shaw) presided over a record attendance. Mr Shaw thanked the Union for its kind invitation. and apologised for the absence of the Mayoress. The Mayor said he would always encourage any organisation working for the lietterment of the borough. Mrs Goring led the devotions. Miss B. M. Harbund, J.U., President, extended a hearty welcome to members and friends. Apologies were received from Mrs T. E. Taylor, Dominion President, Mrs Barrel!, District Treasurer, Mrs Hall, President of New Brighton Union, and Miss Leaver. The following Vinous brought greetings:— St> ~ Opawa. and New Brighton, also Miss A. McKay, Dominion Organiser. Mr C. Deans conveyed greetings from ad the North Canterbury “Y” branches. Miss Jean Florence presented a beautiful bouquet to the Mayor for the Mayoress, also one to Miss Harbund. The recipients responded suitably. Th * Hev. Gardner Miller gave a most inspiring address. Much appreciated musical items were contributed by Mesdames Gardner Miller, Bollard, and Goldman. Mrs gave the recitation, “Friendship,” with much effect. Miss Lovell-Smith gave a demonstration showing the value of milk and other foodstuffs with regard to health. On the motion of Mrs Goring, votes of thanks were passed to the Mayor, Rev. Gardner Miller, and tin soloists. Mrs Karnes was accompanist. The Temperance Doxology was sung, after which a dainty supper was served by members.
