The White Ribbon. “For God, and Home, and Humanity.” WELLINGTON, SEPTEMBER 18, 1927. SELF-DENIAL WEEK.

The N.Z. Alliance is making: an appeal. through the churches and other channels, to all who wish to see a Dry Dominion, that they show the earnestness of their desire by the measure of their sacrifice. The funds are badly needed to enable a clean balance-sheet to be presented this year, and to provide funds for greater activities next year. The appeal takes the form of a SelfDenial Week. Sympathisers are asked to give not what they can afford out

of their abundance, but what they cannot afford except by a sacrifice that counts. Something to be gone without, and its cost given to be used for making the Dominion safe for our children. When the pioneer missionaries came to this land, dear old saints in almshouses in the Motherland denied themselves of sugar or tea or some other luxury (?), no, some other necessity, that they might give their few pence to the Foreign Mission Fund. And it was this money in a great measure that provided the funds to evangelise the dark places of the earth. May the mantle of these staunch old pioneers fall upon many sons and daughters. This is a matter for each one personally, not for Unions as a body. Don’t withdraw any other subscriptions you were giving This is to be a gift for which we deny, not some other good cause, but deny ourselves. It may be a trip we contemplated, a volume we coveted, some article of apparel that can be done without, some delicacy to tempt the palate that can be discon tinned for a week. By this sign only shall we conquer—Self-Denial. Above and beyond all, let it lie selfdenial. Then we connect with a mighty spiritual force, for by this we realise our kinship with the great souls of all time who have denied themselves for the sake of others; by it we follow the footsteps of the Divine Master who freely gave His life a sacrifice for many. “For the heart grows rich in giving, All its wealth in living grain; Seeds which mildew in the garner, Scattered, fill with gold the plain." How long shall I give? “For giving is living.” the angel said. “And must 1 be giving again and again?" “Oh. no,” said the angel, piercing m through, “Just give till the Master stops givim to you.”
