AUCKLAND NOTES.

Intensely interesting events hav* taken place here lately. Madainc Halle Curci gave a fine interview to our newspapers. Mrs Lee Orawie personally presented the great singer with a mag nificent bouquet of rosea and sweet peas, the gift of the Auckland District Kxectt tive, as a tribute of gratitude for Mudam© s brave support of I'rohibition A satin ribbon lettered in gold, spanned the bouquet with the words: "The W.O.TU. thanks you. Auckland, N.Z.” Madame was enraptured with -the presentation, and shaking hands enthusiastically with Mrs Cowle, wav<*d her liouquet, and said: "This is the ITohibltion bouquet. I would sing from the top of my lungs for ITohibitlon.' The effect was tr* mendous on the audience of 3300, and they applauded to the echo.

A great moral victory has ls*en gained for our city by a deputation to the City Council protesting against the shameful pictures on hoardings. A fine t>ody of W.C.T.U. representatives pre sented the case for purity ami high citizenship, and the results surpassed all expectations. Every ind<cent picture was ordered to in* removed, and picture proprietors were told if any further ob Jcotlonable displays were made th* i r licenses would bo cancelled. CY>uld not our Branches use this as a precedent in their own towns?

A protest was also made to the nxuv uger of a shop exhibiting an indecent figure. The police were appealed to. and the figure was removed. If good women would use the great powers they possess, the land would soon be clean. It is because we shrink from doing our duty that evil stalks triumphantly through the land.
