WHAT A COUNTY UNION CAN DO.

The following roport of tile activities of the Ormondville Union was read at the* Hawke’s Bay Convention. We hope our smaller Unions will read it. and realise that, though few in number. there is much that they ran do. and we trust many, by reading it. may be inspired and helped. Monthly meetings have been held fairly regularly. The Union advertises in the “White Ribbon." The essay competition literature, wi‘h Kducatiou Leaflet 13, was delivered b/ ’he Union at each house. The Union purchased prayer cards for distribution. These ar* 4 to be given to the children at the public school gate directly school reopens. Members sent a contribution of cakes to the Napier Union's shop in aid of campaign funds. A special Union meeting was held, at which Mrs Venables was present, and gave an address, and a collection was taken in aid of the Palmerston North W.C.T.U. Orphanage. It was decided to hold a series of public meetings in the Town. Hall before the poll. ;nd to contract for the term of live months for the hire of said hall, in order to secure a reduction of rent, usually 30s per night. The Union now pays 25s per night, the expense being met by the collection at the meetings, supplemented by private donations when insufficient. It was also arranged to inaugurate community singing as an introduction to these meetings. Unfortunately, we had involved ourselves in the stocking and sale of sing books similar to the. e used in Wellington just before the Alliance advertised the campaign books for sale Three public meetings have already been held, speakers being Mrs Prryman in July. Messrs F Heaton and J Pnrlane in August. and Mi’** Hon in September. l - *aoh of these meetings was well attended, and wo are still solvent, although wo have not yet canvassed for cash or had any money-raising efforts. We have not as yet sent a contribution to the Mary Armor Fund, but fully intend to do so. The 1 nion is hiring a lorry to take them to Panne* vtVp to hear Pr. Armor. In response to the Alliance’s request for hoardings to display posters, a largo hoarding. 9ft. x 6ft., has been erected

m a vacant section on the main road, us all the local church properties are on side streets, where the poster would not be seen. The poster has been on the boards for a fortnight, and is much admired by the public. A. F. WEBB. I’resident. E. A. WILSON, Secretary.

\ certain prelate, while travelling in America, was once mistaken for a commercial traveller by a man who was a the same line of business, and who met him in a railway train. “Do you represent a big house?’’ asked the traveller of the bishop. “Biggest on earth,” replied his lordship. "What’s the name of the firm?” “Lord and Church.” “Hum! ‘Lord and Church.’ Never heard of it. C.ot branch houses anywhere?” “Branch houses all over the world.” "That’s queer. Never heard of 'em.
