W.C.T.U. ANNUAL PROVINCIAL CONVENTION, TARANAKI.

The annual Provincial Convention of the W.P.T.P. was held at Normanby on June Pith. A very successful meeting, marked by exceptionally good attendance and much enthusiasm. This was noticeable especially in the discussions, in which practically all the members took p ,i. and in the confidence with which new work was undertaken. Officers and delegates from cvety branch of the Province attended, and practically all the reports showed progress in one nr ar.ither form of work during the year, though in several cases a slight falling off in membership was noted. To meet thus, it was decided, during an animated discussion, to work up tlie scattered members division, and Mrs Hayward, of Hawera, was elected Provincial Superintendent, each Union being asked to elect a local superintendent. The Convention approved the resolutions sent in by several branches during the year asking for the training and use of policewomen, also protesting , against indentured labour In Samoa. Several branches reported successful sales for various causes. Manaia had raised most money by this means, £3BO for the Central European Fund hnd £9O 14s fid for shelter sheds for the school children: Hawera had raised £IOO for the Central European Fund; Wanganui. £2OO for a Women’s Hostel; Eltham. £6O for Dr. Barnardo’s Homes; besides smaller donations by several branches to the Seamen’s Mission and other deserving objects. Literature had been well distributed, flowers sent to hospitals, and Ngaere had collected »>0 garments to be distributed by the Salvation Army. During the afternoon a five minutes’ speech competition was held, with four “lit rics, on “The Power of Prayer,’ Mrs Curtiss and Mrs Hill, both of Haweru, tying for first place. Mrs Atkinson spoke on the prospects of victory at the coming election, which she concluded had never been brighter. The provincial officers, Mrs Philips (Pres.), Mrs Jameson (Treas.), Miss Pat-

terson (Sec.), were all re-elected, and it was decided to accept the invitation of the New Plymouth Branch to hold the next Convention in that town. Eltham ami Ngaere also sent Invitations. Reports showed the total membership lift 1 active members, 67 honorary members. 775 Cradle Roll members, 126 "White Ribbon” subscribers. Special praise must be given to the New Plymouth Cradle Roll Department, under Miss Ambury, with 302 members, and the L.T.L. at Manaia, under Miss Patterson. Mention must also be made of new work undertaken by several Pnions in putting members on School Committees. A vote of sympathy with Mrs X. Jones in the loss of her husband was passed, all standing. Much credit is due to the Normanby Pnion for its very successful arrangements.
