WILLARD CHILDREN'S HOME.

knowing the members of W.C.T.U. throughout New Zealand are keenly interested in the Palmerston North W.C. TV. (Children’s Home and their Extension Scheme, which is exercising the minds of the Board at present, as the need for it is becoming more and more acute, we forward to you a “short account” of how the work is progressing during the present financial crisis. Work to raise funds for the extension rf the Home was commenced the 2nd week in April. The Extension Scheme is to build, a nursery for infants, a department for the older children, and still another department to ‘take in” children for a short period of time, while the mother is ill. or in hospital. A strong Committee was set up. and after three weeks’ work, a very successful Chrysanthemum Show was held, at which there was both a sweet and produce stall. This function brought in the sum of £KS. clear of expenses, which was considered very satisfactory for the short time there had t>oen to organise in. After the Chrysanthemum Show, attention was turned to a Jumble Side. V Committee, consisting of fourteen Indies undertook this work. A thorough canvass of the whole of the town was made for “promises” of left-off clothing, produce and food, which the Scout Boys kindly collected the Saturday before the Sale. In connection with the Jumble Bale. Pel I ding. Marton. Pahiatua, Woodville, Levin and Shannon were visited; all these towns with the exception of Woodville responded very liberally, helping to make the Sale the financin' success it was, £llO clear of expenses being realised. While the Jumble Sale was being organised. the children of Terrace End. undei the leadership of a local lady and her assistants, were trained, and gave in entertainment, which brought in £l-> odd. A choir concert is now being organise!, to take place the eqd of July or the beginning of August, the separate choirs each to provide h certain number of items; also an afternoon entertainment for children In the form of a picture matinee, kindly being given by the manager of pictures (“Independent"). While all these smaller functions arc l*eing organised and carried out, i

Spring Bulb Show, to Im* held in Sep tember, at which there is to Ik> a plain and fancy sewing stall, is also Is-ing worked up. The florists of the town have kindly offered to join our (’ommittee and do their utmost to make the Show a success. At the annual meeting of the Board of Management, our l»a lance-sheet showed we had £IOOO in hand for our Ex tension Scheme, hut as far as we can see. we expec t to need between two and three thousand pounds. Palmerston North W.C.T.U. would be very pleased tr eceive large or small donations of any kind to assist in this work.
