In a session of the Vienna Town Council, held on June 12th. for the first time in Austria a woman presided, when Frau Amalie Seidi took the Burgomaster’s chair as his deputy. MAYOR AND TOWN CO I NCIL OF WOMEN. Imngley, a town in Whidby Island. Puget Sound, has a Mayor and Council all women. During 1919 no meeting of the Council was held, as a quotum of men could not be obtained. But so fat the women elected for 1920 have not missed a meeting. An old resident sums up the success of the experiment thus: “Handicapped by *ack of experience and help from the men. the woman Council compares favourably with any Council that Langley h;is ever had. and our people are justly proud of our woman Mayor and Council.' Jewett, a Texas town, has a Town Council composed of a woman Mayor and five women Aldermen. The only man in office is the marshal. WOMEN’S FRANCHISE IN INDIA. Travancore is the first State in India to grant voting powers to women on the same conditions as they have been given to men. Under the Reform Bill the new Legislative Councils were granted power to extend the franchise to women. Madras Council has excluded women from the franchise. The Government of Tndia has appointed Mrs Prvsdale as Advisory Directress of Female Education at a salary of 800 rupees per month. SOUTH AFRICA. Rhodesia has enfranchised the women and has also elected a woman as M.P. Mrs .Tollie is the first woman >i.P, in South Africa. Mr Harold Gladstone Miller, a selected Rhodes sscholar. is the son of Mrs Nellie Miller, an active worker in our Masterton Union. We are sure all White Ribboners will heartily congratulate this brilliant young student. Miss Maude Royden. England’s famous lady prencher. on June 6th occupied Calvin’s pulpit at Geneva.
