WHY ONE WIFE?
A woman missionary in C hina wis t.iking tea with a mandarin’s eight wives. Ihe Chinese laches examined her clothing, her hair, hc*r t°c*th, and so on, hut her feet especially amaze cl them. “Wli\,” cried one, “you can walk and urn as well is a man.” “Yes, to be sure,” said the missionarv. “Can you r cl** a horse* and swim, too?” “Yes.” “Then you must be as strong ns a man !” “I am.” “ And you wouldn’t lc t a man beat you not even if lie* was your husband would you?” “Indeed I wouldn’t,’ the mission* arv said. The* mandarin’s eight wives looked at one another, nodding heads. Then the oldest one said, softly: “Now I understand why the foreign devil never lias more than one* wife, lie is afraid!”
