WOMEN IN GOVERNMENT APPOINTMENTS.

In France, Marguerite Calve has been attached to the Cabinet of the Minister of Public Instruction, and the Minister of Blockade has a woman private secretary. Mr Lloyd George also has a woman private secretary. In Algiers women may be Clerks to the Magistrate. In Great Britain four women were ;y>pointed insurance Commissioners, with inc same salaries as their male colleagues. Under the Local Gov eminent Board there is .i superintendent lady inspeetor and six inspectors of hoarding out, i.c , children who, under Poor f *w, are placed in families. Ireland has two wom p n inspectors of boarding-out. The Public Trustee lias a woman visitor for children. The Home Government has ninetern w omen factory inspectors and one woman doctor inspector of prisons. One woman is Governor of \ylesbury Prison and its three annexes. Thre women aio m°mbers of Trade Boards. The Board of Education has one worn.m medical officer and twentysev°n school inspectors. Two women have recently been appointed visitors of the Institutions for Defectives under the Lunacy Act of i.Xpo, and one has be°n appointed a paid Commissioner under the Mental Deficiency Act of 10 *3• The London County Council has a woman as l)e]nit\ l hairm.tn, and employs .1 number of women in higher appointments. The highest office und“r a local authority filled by a woman is that of Assistant Education Ofticct for London, held by Miss Philippa Fawcett Women have been placed on a large number of Government committees since the war. The Women’s Army Services, viz., the Woman’s Army Auxiliary Corps, the Woman’s Royal Air Force, and the Woman’s Royal Naval Service, have women chiefs, women officers, and women heads of the* Medical Service.
