THE EDUCATION THAT IS NEEDED.

11Y I>R J. E. IIETT. If there is anything that children should be given, it is an education which will make real men and women, endowed with happiness for themselves and others. It must he an education which will discipline nature’s energies in proper thoughts in harmony with natural laws, so that the voyage of life will he useful and happy. It must he an education which will endeavour to unfold from w ithin the sovereignty of character. Will our present system of education do this? Will our Churches do this? Will the State do this? TllMi questions which should interest every educator in the land. We are spending many millions of dollars on education annually and we are proud of it, hut are the results above attained ? (>ur Churches are spending many millions annually, hut are they attaining the results aimed at? In order to have a better idea of actual conditions we must look at life not as it seems on the outside, but as it really is. Before education can he properly introduced, so that the greatest good w ill result with the least cost, it will he necessary to make

a proper diagnosis of all the conditions pertaining to the misuse of the sex nature. Until this is done it will he impossible to apply proper remedies. One of the best articles in this respect appeared in The Light a few months ago by Miss Mabel Dedrick of the Moody Church, Chicago. She found in houses of shame not only ignorant girls, hut girls who have been given all the polishes in education, having been College-bred and tine musicians, and girls w ho sang in Church choirs. What must be the conditions of thousands of others who are not in those places hut still live a life of lust and ▼iciousness?

In a papei given by the iSecretaTy of the Temperance and Moral Reform movement of Canada, he stated that in one locality he found three daughters of ministers in houses of shame. Why are those unfortunate and educated victims there ? These are questions we must solve before the proper treatments or prophylaxis can be applied. Clergymen, as a rule, know’ but little of the evil which actually exists, but medical men do. People present their best side to their pastors and their worst side of life to their physicians. Physicians and nurses know more about the dark side of life than anyone

else, and we must look to them to throwlight upon this great evil, that men and women will be aroused to a sense of duty. Physicians are very much exposed to temptations and many become slaves to the god of money and will not live up to the high standards of the traditions of their noble calling. This is the case in America, where the laws governing abortions are very lax, which is not the case in England and Germany. Our States do not realise and the public does not know the good which conscientious physicians accomplish and the great harm that is done by physicians without scruple or principle, who besmirch their souls with the blood of innocents. Many children do I meet now in the schools and on the streets, that I fought for before they were born, and succeeded in convincing the mothers that they must, love the unborn child instead of ha.'im O it. It is not difficult to teach women these law’s. With the aid of their intuitive powers they quickly understand The State does not recognise the groat damage done by the wretch of a doctor who prostitutes his calling bv obliging a fool of a woman, though she be rich and educated. Are we living in a state o* reason and common sense ? We leave it to your judgment, and we will ask parents what guarantee you have that your children w ill not fall into disgrace and cause you much misery and suffering ? Many parents, if they could but look ahead and see the conditions their sons and daughters will be in in about fifteen years hence, they would sacritice every dollar they had to have them educated properly so that they would exercise the laws of self-control over their inherited passions. Education must be of such a nature that children will he able to overcome the inherited evils and passions. They must be taught the beauty and harmony of creative laws as they exist in nature. They must be taught to respec* their physical bodies so as not to defile the temple of their souls. The Light.
